I've got a some money burning a hole and am going to get a new car. My original thought was a V8 Vantage, but a friend of mine has just binned his 997 and I'm thinking about buying on the cheap. It just has panel damage, and being a big fan of the GT3 RS, I'm thinking of doing that heinous thing and creating a replica.

I presume the RS has a slightly wider stance, but would it be that noticeable? Is there anything else, other than the body kit, wheels and some lairy paint that would need replacing?

I'm surprised there aren't more replicas around - is there a reason for this?

Any tips and advice?

I'm not trying to create an all show and no go vehicle - I've got bikes for speed and love the image of the RS.

Cheers

It's going to look st. You know it; I know it; we all know it.

Buy the Carrera; fix it and enjoy it. Making an 'RS' replica out of it is just too cringe-worthy for words.

I'm convinced there's something distinctly queer about people who drive replicas. It's just not right.

Whatever money you pour into creating the replica is dead money - you will never get it back at resale (assuming you will be able to sell it!)

If your budget allows, buy a genuine GT3. It will be the real thing and you will get most of your money back when/if you get bored of it.

I think the general rule for GT3 bodykits is that they are just about acceptable if originally specced and factory fitted but otherwise they are hiding a cat c/d car. If you are ever planning on selling it after you could do better with your money, like setting fire to it and using it to heat the house :-)

If you can get the car cheap do it and restore it back to how it left the factory.

Don't build a replica, instead why don't you re-create the 997 Exclusive car?

I can't say I wasn't expecting similar responses laugh

I would aim to create something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-PORSCHE-911-997-3-6...

Which I don't think looks too bad. Obviously the price is ridiculous - I'm more interested in the vehicle itself.

I'm not a fan of the 996 and don't want to spend 997 GT3 money.

Buying the car and creating the RS I don't think would cost more than £20k, and I think, although I'm not too arsed about the money, that that sort of figure would be achieved on the sale.

Whereas I can tell that's a fake from a mile off.

It's your money at the end of the day, but I have the same regard for replicas as I do for rapists and paedophiles.

There aren't more replicas around because there appear to be enough people with the sense not to.

Tips or advice? Don't do it.

Look at this hateful creation for a worked example of why you wouldn't:

If you want to do something RS inspired, stick to Tequipment options and you won't waste your money.

Thanks for the reply.

Looking at the link you posted, exterior wise the only difference I can see between a genuine example - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p... - is the rings around the eyes and the red section of the grill? Although, of course, my knowledge of these cars is very much limited.

I'm very much swaying towards the Aston now.

Oh behave! It was a joke. Any rational human being can clearly see that a building replica is a far more heinous crime.

Assuming you keep the car for say 2 years, I think you'll be fare better off financially and certainly from a driving perspective by borrowing a bit of money and buying a real 997 GT3.

You'll lose all the money you put into the conversion and have a limited market to sell, which will hammer the price, whereas the GT3 will return the vast majority of the money, so even if you had to borrow some, you'll be better off.

If you are happy with a replica, buy one ready done it will save you a fortune

Have you priced up all the RS bits & bobs from the dealer ? I wouldn't be surprised if they're just a little bit scary.

oldpara, T911 magazine tested a year or two ago a car modified by a Porsche specialist based at Halesowen who have a brand called Eurocup GT. l would tell you the publication number from my secret stash of Porsche magazines although the clearout pixies found the pile.

Google says issue '69'.....

Please, for the love of all things holy, buy the Aston. A 2.7 RS recreation is one thing, but the world really doesn't need a crappy fake modern RS. If you want to throw money at a modern 911 by all means visit the guys at Ruf, 9E or even Tech 9 if you just want to mess about with the way the car looks, but please spare us all of your initial intension.

Edit - Links added.

I've been trying to formulate a logical and reasoned argument for not doing this, but it's not easy.

I mean, it's a free country, and you should do what makes you happy.

A 2.7RS evocation is ok in my book, but this is wrong, very wrong. It makes me cringe and suck air through my teeth.

People will point, laugh and shake their heads.

But you should do what you want.
