Following a prompt about my car, I had a look at values. The average price of a Spyder on PH Classifieds is £39,567 and the average mileage is 9,100. Of the 10 for sale, 4 have the wrong seats, one is LHD and one has 20,000 miles. Seems like they are holding up quite well (assuming any of these sell!).

Doesn't 10 for sale just on PH say something about a very limited build car? Ie, they are not selling particularly quickly?

Nope porsche OPC cars are all listed on piston heads and they seem to have just got a few cars lately.
All wrong spec though lol.

The new higher prices are slowing down sales though, as people waited for 30k cars and that did not happen, prices are up on last year by about 3 or 4k.

A big issue is the manual, buckets seated cars with Spyder wheels don't come up for sale much, owners seem to be keeping hold of them.

Up until two weeks ago there were only 2 for sale through OPC's.

Seems the time to sell is actually in January/February, going by recent transactions...

Still, the <£30k Spyder won't be here anytime soon, irrespective of seats smile

I would quite like one and i like PDK.
What are the main dealers bidding on the ones with same spec as the ones advertised at £36k odd?

Porsche has really got the new Boxster & Caymen right, once these start coming through it could effect spyder prices.

981S already available from OPC at under £43k.

Don't think the 2 cars are chasing the same audience?

I have a manual Spyder with bucket seats, Spyder alloys, sports chrono, sports exhaust, FPSH, Zymol wax, one lady owner, indicators never used etc. Serious offers only LOL

Come back this time next year. Spyder prices will be pretty much where they are now while the £40K 981 you could have bought will be touching £30K.

Spec is critical... I considered the essentials to be seats, wheels and exhaust in that order. I paid £31k for mine from 911V 6 weeks ago but it has done 35k miles. Pretty immaculate though and under OPC warranty until April 2014.

Funny thing is I feel like I'm struggling to bond with it as it was (by my standards) a lot of money...£10k more than I've ever spent on a car before. I worry about it, leaving it places, pushing it, tracking it, all the things I bought it for. I wonder whether I'd be happier in a £12-£15k Elise.

Oh well I may as well keep it for the "summer", it is a beautifully made thing and drives incredibly well. Funny old game, cars.

Agree.

Manual or PDK personal choice but the right wheels and seats are a must. PSE is a joy.

I feel the same about the worry of where to park it and tracking it etc but at end of the day you have to use it or not worth having. Good thing is values are rock solid.

You'll bind with it, don't worry.

I have spent too much time washing mine over the last 3 years but it's sat in the garage now, dirty after 250 miles in crap wet weather on Saturday.

Track it and watch it come to life!

Important thing is to get the balance right - personally I get more enjoyment using it than looking at it despite how shiny I generally keep it.

The Boxster Spyder does not fill a need -- it fills a desire.

The few people who buy one thinking they're hardcore enough to daily-drive it will sell it within a year and buy a Boxster S or Cayman S, depending on whether or not the Spyder has turned them off to convertible tops.

The rest will be sold to people who can afford a garage full of expensive cars, and they'll spend a lot of time sitting there looking pretty. (They are the prettiest of the Boxster/Cayman line, after all.)

When they do get driven, though, they'll reach deep into the back of the owner's brain and stimulate the pleasure centers that only a sports car can. For those precious few hours you spend on a proper country road or racetrack during any given year, you'll want nothing else but to keep driving.

Sums it up :-)

FWIW ... Sold our pdk spyder (bucket seats + spyder wheels) for 35k privately earlier this year. Had 4k miles and was a 61 plate in mint condition with 3rd year warranty...

I agree with the desire bit, it's automotive art. However, re the driving, I'm not convinced. Admittedly my experience is based on a short drive on A rather than B roads, but having driven so many cars, I'd also like to think I can spot a proper drivers' car. The Spyder was not that for me. I felt scuttle shake right from the get go, it felt slow, the PSE was surprisingly quiet, and overall it just felt, well, boring to be honest.

In a Chris Harris moment, I have to say maybe I've got it wrong. The owner (who I won't disclose) has owned loads of brilliant cars, and really rates it. Not sure what I missed, but I felt the same when I bought a Boxster years ago. I sold that within weeks.

A great drivers' car has to cut it on almost any journey for me, and cars like the Elise do that. This is not about which is the better car, ie quicker, more comfortable, better built etc, it's about which one would I get up for in the morning and want to go out for a blast in. I'm afraid a Spyder would be washed, waxed, admired and put away.
