Planning on looking at a 2008 2.7 Cayman that had an IMS replacement under warranty in 2010. The OPC said they knew of a number of 2008 Caymans that had IMS replacements.

Should this be a worry or a good thing?

2.7s having a number of replacement IMS? This is news to me. I always thought the 2.7 engine was much more reliable. And, I'm amazed an OPC salesman would admit this. Was he trying to get you to buy from him because of the official warranty that comes with an OPC car?

On post-2006 987s, an IMS replacement effectively means a total engine stripdown. AFAIK IMS issues on these engines are very rare; at least I hope so as I have a 2007 Boxster...

RMS replacements are much more common and relatively easy to do with the engine in situ, maybe this is what the dealer meant?

This was the service dept confirming the work they had done on a car I was interested in buying. They said it was 5 hours warranty work and definitely an intermediate shaft bearing.

I spoke to my friendly local Indy, surprised as you are. They believed there had been a newly upgraded bearing replacement in 2009 and that the fact that it had been replaced was a good thing.

Think I'll get mine done in that case.
