Hello,

I've just got a new Cayman, and without thinking today I filled it up with normal unleaded. I know that's not a huge problem, but it would be nice to be running it on the higher RON stuff. I've done a bit of reading, and it seems like it will take quite a while for the car to naturally reset itself to Super, so is there a way to shortcut that process (that doesn't involve disconnecting the battery)?

Cheers

Not that I know of - the knock sensor will automatically retard the ignition for 95 RON, and then move back once it senses a higher octane. My best advice, based on no expertise whatsoever is try and drain the tank as far as possible, and then fill up with 98 fuel.

Welcome to the forum. Which model Cayman have you purchased?

With regard to your question, I think its just a case of filling it with Super as soon as possible and the ECU will then detect the higher octane and re-advance the ignition accordingly.

Pretty sure there's a quick procedure with the ignition which resets it - read it on boxa.net I think a while ago - sorry can't remember what it is though - really helpful I know....!

Dont drain the tank. Thats not going to change anything!

Just fill up with Shell Optimax Nitro when you next fill up.

In normal road driving most of the improvement is in your head.

Anyone with proper Porsche diagnostics can reset the adaptions for you, but wait until you're on your second tank of Vpower Nitro+ Turbo Nutter B@stard (or whatever they're calling it this week). smile

actually if its brand new running in on normal unleaded is not an issue as you will be using less than half the revs.the ecu retards the ignition for 95 and you have slightly less power and does no damage to the engine even a 911 turbo can run on unleaded but i always put in/recommend shells finest

Sorry, I didn't mean actually drain it - I just meant 'use it up until it's nearly empty'.

Great -thanks very much for the advice. I'll just use this tank and then put Super Unleaded in from now on. By the sounds of it that should sort it out in a few weeks.

Trev450, I've got the 2.7 Cayman PDK. Just spent the afternoon detailing it and it looks quality! I just hope it doesn't rain now!

It won't take any time at all for the DME to adjust to the super unleaded when you refill the fuel tank.

The DME constantly adjusts timing based on a variety of factors/influences and inputs and one is the knock sensor.

All I would recommend you do is as soon at the fuel tank level gets say half way down fill up with super unleaded and that's that.

Well, that and tie a string around your finger as a reminder to never fill up your Cayman's fuel tank with normal unleaded again.
