Absolutely loving my mk1. Just a few question if i may.
1. Braking from high speed isn't as impressive as i'd like. Don't want to mod the car though (fit mk2 calipers). Will a change to pagid yellows and some ate fluid help presumably ?
2. I think my car has a 997 quick shift. Its the only mod on there i believe. Im not totally convinced by it as its almost has a bit too much friction and i would like it more fluid if possibke. What is the std. shift like ?
Thanks

Good choice in car......
I like mine as it was designed. My brakes are excellent and the standard shift is smooth as.
I have Steve at Jazz look after mine and the set up of the car is so important. That would be my first port of call.
I can not recommend Jazz highly enough.
Nice to hear you are enjoying the car. Any pictures as I am missing mine, but get to see it two weeks from today!!!!! whoop whoop and a North south European trip...... Sorry a little excited......

Glad to hear someone else is enjoying one of these fabulous cars.
The stock shift on mine is very slick with solid feeling stops in the gate. A real pleasure to operate.
My brakes do rumble but have never faded. They do require a firmer foot compared with a Carrera.
One thing I've wondered about is pad degredation through heat cycling, and whether refreshing with even stock pads would make a difference.

I would wait util you need new brakes and then upgrade to PF or similar, the only downside for me is the dust which is awful. The gear change in my Mk2, even in standard form is realy slick and spot-on for me, I dont know why people need to go short-shift in these cars?
Have fun

Thanks guys, will go back to standard shift then i think.
Handling is perfect, very tail happy which is great. What i love about the car is its not overtyred so moves around aplenty and doesnt have stupidly high limits or ridiculous acceleration. You can still just about wring it out on the public road without feeling too bad.

The standard Mk 1 brakes tend to feel wooden until warmed through, once warm their bite should be perfect and modulation easy. Can't remember what the disc condition was like ? take a peek on the inner faces ? If the pads are worn or the discs corroded at all, they'll lack real bite from speed. The standard Textar pads and OE discs are up to extremely fast road use but may need increased airflow to reduce brake temperatures. The Mk2 ducts that fit on the outer faces of the inner flitches along with opening up the arch liners and blanking of the standard "exhaust" ducts in the undertray, will result in a massive increase in cooling air to the discs and calipers.1. Technically speaking it is a quick er shift than the standard 996 item, but we're talking 5-10% maximum, the B&M item that came off the car was closer to 35-40%, IIRC the decrease in throw results in a similar percentage increase in effort. If you think the 997 item has too much friction, you'd have found the B&M item completely abhorrent. Thanks
My car runs a Manthey shift assembly that slightly reduces the throw, that does not increase its weight but does add a huge amount of precision to the shift quality. Olaf Manthey developed it because he tried various other quick shifts and found them too be far to heavy and baulky (especially when cold)
As you know, I hardly drove the car, but my overiding memory was the simply huge improvment in shift quality after the change from the B&M QS to the 997 item. Prior to fitting the 997 item, it was was well nigh impossible to get any gears when the car was cold, reverse was a game of chance and finding gears when looking for a fast shift was at best a lottery. I'm glad to say the 997 item transformed how the car drove.
