..to buy a 986 Boxster 2.7 with 216,000 miles on it?!!! I ask because there is only for sale at the moment on Autotrader advertised with "motorway" miles on it for £3295! Looks very clean in the photos, but is it likely to be one thrash away from expiring?!

I've got that Boxster itch, but a small potential budget and seeing stories about engine problems on 996/997/986 Porsche's does worry me. Are they potentially that troublesome? Would you risk a cheap Boxster as a second car for a bit of fun?

What year is it? If it has the onboard computer (DME) then you can obtain operating hours. Divide miles by operating hours and you get average speed. If its high, then it's likely most miles are motorway.

But then again different owners (assuming it has more than 1) may have treated it differently.

I would have thought that it would have expired by now if it was going to.

Like always it's a question of condition. if it's had everything done as it needed it could be fine. But if it needs brakes clutch flywheel coffin arms then you can easily spend the asking price and more.

You need a lucky eye and a load of receipts to check it with. Or shell out on a PPI if it looks any good.

Unfortunately it's hardly ever a question of thrashing it till it expires!

If it's a decent car with nothing major doing then just buy it and enjoy it - it's got to be worth a grand or two in bits so hardly a big risk in the scheme of things if it did have a catastrophic engine failure (and most don't of course). The sun's out. smile

^^^^^^^^^ This. Life's to short. Go buy it, enjoy it and don't spend your time driving it worrying about if it's about to go bang.

A brand new Porsche is losing more in depreciation every 6 months than you're paying for this.

Disposable motoring. Open air summer fun for the cost of a decent TV.

Happy Days.

Just had a look at it on Autotrader and it looks very nice (I would say that though as it is the same colour as mine).

Did you see this one?

I did, but don't like the paint job, or the fact that its tip tronic.

Plenty of cheap Boxsters out there, 2.5s or 2.7s...Cant imagine they will drop much lower will they?

Lol, I posted the link as a joke (should have out a smilie in my post). wink

I don't know what's going to happen to boxster prices, it is crazy that you can buy a good lowish miles example with service history for £5k.

..I just picked up a 53 plate S in Silver, some lovely huge recent bills (clutch one of them) and FSH for a little over £4k. Needs a few small bits of tidying but nothing scary. 132k on the clock - drives beautifully.

Fingers crossed it stays that way!
