I have a 997 GT2 that I bought last year which had a clutch that slipped in high gears at low revs. I duly ordered a Stage 3 Race Clutch Kit from Sachs in Germany (hopefully in time for my Nurburgring trip). However, the kit didn't arrive in time so I chanced it and decided to "take it easy" at the Ring with the slipping clutch. The strange thing was, as soon as I took the car on some high speed runs, the clutch completely stopped slipping. I have since tried everything I can to get it to slip again (a couple of laps of the ring and a 50mph-160mph autobahn dash in sixth gear) but nothing! The guy I bought the car off only used it to commute into London with no high speed or track use at all. Is it possible that he glazed the clutch plate doing this and that my more "spirited" driving has cleaned it off again? Myself and the local OPC are completely baffled . Meanwhile I am left with a clutch kit that I paid around a grand for that I do not need. If anyone with a 997 GT2 or 997 Turbo (2007-2009) wants a high specification clutch kit (engineered to 750hp)- it's for sale for a bargain price!

Yeah, apparently the clutch is not far off its limit, especially when weather is cold, I've spoken to OPC and Specialist Cars Malton, even happens on new cars. OPC told me that they replace very very few clutches on these cars as they are fairly heavy duty and last quite a while unless very badly driven. I looked into Sachs kit too, but after speaking to everyone and their mother decided not to and leave it alone - at least for the time being. Mine only did it a couple of times in 6th under full boost, it was Zero Degrees outside and car was still cold, bit like cold steel brakes I guess, takes a bit of warming up!

I don't know if it's any different on a 911 but on cars in general the clutch friction plate could get oil on it if dripping/weeping from the rear main seal - which could cause slippage until it burnt off. It certainly sounds like a viable explanation to what happened here. smile

Thanks guys. Think the weather does affect it as, thinking about it, when the clutch was slipping it was freezing outside. Not sure it was a result of anything leaking though as the problem would be recurrent. Fingers crossed so far!

I had the same. Remapped car took clutch to it's limit, on cold days it would slip under full boost maybe 10% of the time, when engine/gearbox hot, no slippage at all. New Sachs 890Nm clutch fitted last year and never slipped since.
