The 15k Cayman?
Discussion
Here's a thought. Caymans are now touching 15k for sensible looking metal.
I've only driven the R and the S, but am considering swapping my 944 daily for a 2.7 5 speed. This is the car for the shops, work etc. the 944 is a bit limited because I don't really like taking it too far 'cos its 29 years old and the steering is a bit wobbly!
I went to see my sister last weekend, 100 mile round trip, looked at the driveway: don't want to put 100 motorway miles on the GT3 (for so many reasons!), don't trust the 944, GF needed the MR2, so I jumped in the Berlingo. This can't be right!
Second option at this price is back to an M3 (V8 at a stretch) or a Boxster. Or just drop a less smoky engine in the '44 and recondition the rack!
I want something fun, reliable, easy to drive, with a bit of weekend away space.
What's the 5 speed 2.7 like to live with? Any cheaper to run than the S in the real world?
Appreciate your thoughts.

NB on the road I think the MR2 1.8 is plenty quick enough. I don't fancy a C2 996, because two 911s is just greedy and a bit pricey to run.
Just to be clear, this will replace the 944, because I don't have any more space left. The idea of running a classic is fantastic, but would only work if my practical car was, well, more fun than a diesel berlingo. However, the Citroen needs to stay because its brilliant at everything except being fun to drive.
Final thought... Has the Cayman got roof bar mounting points?

Horrid interior, but I like the Speed Yellow.
Looks way over priced too, but this is the sort of thing I have in mind.

I could do with some other replies about use ability too. The price gap between S and non-S is pretty small, and I don't mind an older car.
Happy to have no toys, although cruise would be nice.

Yes, but i think you need to get the official Porsche roof carrier kit. Something to do with the way the roof curves.Just to be clear, this will replace the 944, because I don't have any more space left. With regard to daily usability, I used mine for numerous trips to the local tip when I was refurbishing a house. You can get quite a lot in the front and back, especially if you get the grill that fits behind the seats.

I did a bit of googling, and can see there are options for the roof. Good to know.
I've got the Citroen for trips to the tip. I was really thinking about real world cost difference between an S and a 2.7, and whether the 5 speed is as good as the 6.
Realistic mpg for both? Servicing will be the same, and tyres. Insurance will be about the same too. Tax bands?
I bought an early MR2 because I prefer the 5 speed to the 6 - the car is so light that the broader gearing helps on a back road.

For a Gen 1 Cayman VED is higher for the S due to its 6 speed box. However, this will also affect a 2.7 with a 6 speed box.I've got the Citroen for trips to the tip. I was really thinking about real world cost difference between an S and a 2.7, and whether the 5 speed is as good as the 6.

Over 38k miles I have got about 26 mpg in my 2.7, but that is mainly shortish journeys and the occasional blast around the lanes where I live. Brakes might be slightly more for the S as they are bigger than on the 2.7.

Whats wrong with putting 100miles on your '3?
It's not very comfy and pretty loud at a motorway cruise. It does 23 mpg. It wanders on the cambers and doesn't like the pot holes in the village, not to mention the speed bumps at my destination. Plus, with consumables and servicing being what they are, it's a pretty expensive way to travel.
I'm not that fussed about miles on the clock, although its only on 26k at the moment. I've got it to use, and it goes out a couple of times a week. It isn't even garaged.
It's a special occasions car, for when I really want a focussed drive. It's not for rainy Friday nights for when I just need to go somewhere.
