Getting closer to popping my 911 cherry

Noticed a nice 997 Carrera at the Independent Motor Company - nice spec, Basalt black, 54 plate, 73k miles, £20,995

That looks like a reasonable price for a nice spec 997, albeit not an 'S'.

I guess what's putting me off is that I do 12k miles a year so this is pretty quickly going to be 100k and I'm not sure if a) that'll properly hammer the residuals and b) that means I'm heading for big bills

Thoughts?

I recently bought my first Porsche, a Gen 1 S and I am loving it. This is a second car though, and I'll probably cover between 5-6k a year in it. I don't think 911 prices are as mileage sensitive as some other marques, but certainly covering 12k a year is going to hurt residuals, how much is anyone's guess but it'll limit your market come resale time. There is also the running cost side of things to look at, and there is no denying they'll cost - that sort of mileage is going to get through fuel/tyres/servicing and other bits which may need replacing as mileage ticks over the 100k. Good luck whatever you decide to do smile

Thanks Nick. Some helpful comments in there. My head say a 911 isnt the right car for my every day use and I should look elsewhere or get an older 996/Boxster plus a reasonable daily driver.

(My heart says lifes too short and I should enjoy every one of my 12k miles/year in a 997!)

I don't think 12k p.a. is that bad. You see a few (not loads, but a few) 2-3 year cars coming through OPC approved that have that level of use. And as the car's done 70k already and is older I just don't see it's an issue. I suppose 100k is a psychological barrier but on the other hand, what's the least a 911 can be worth and how far is that away from £20k?

I don't think it should be a huge concern, but your money!

You need to define what level of depreciation and maintenance cost you think is 'big'.

I think that relatively for the type of car it is, these costs will be reasonable, but there is always the risk of large bills.

If the car cost 5k in depreciation and 5k in maintenance over say 2 or 3 years, would that be ok?

If those were the costs involved, I'd buy it tomorrow. I'd anticipate it costing more than that.

That 997 is at the bottom of a steep depreciation curve.I've seen a 996 C4S with 133k on the clock up for sale for £15k.Big miles don't seem to hurt them too much.May I suggest you buy it, enjoy it, and fix anything as it breaks, and don't fret about residuals. They'll be better than you think. If you were going to buy a new one, depreciation really should scare you, many thousands of £ every year. When they get to 9 years old, the depreciation curve is pretty shallow.
