? I feel the other way, they go out to build a light weight all alloy sports car and it comes in at 1650kg'shttp://www.autocar.co.uk/car-video/video-jaguar-f-...

what went wrong ?
F-Type looks & sounds superb and (by all accounts) drives well. But.... I agree with MrDemon - why did it end-up so heavy?
If it was 200kg lighter, it would make the difference between 'good first effort' and 'sensational'. It would also likely perform as well as, if not better than the 991 3.4 Cab.
Personally, I think the F-Type already wins on looks, 'presence' and sonics, but the rather lardy weight (and its effect on driving dynamics) would currently put me off buying.

Fail on Jag's part then.
You'd need to be a dyed in the wool Jag fan to consider the two and then buy the Jag.
Not necessarily. You'd need to be a dyed in the wool Jag fan to consider the two and then buy the Jag.
Here on PH, most of us put driving dynamics and performance at, or near the top of our list of priorities when choosing a car. For many buyers, however, how a car drives on the limit and its out-and-out, 10/10ths performance are only part of the equation and are often nowhere near the top of their priority list. Other factors, such as the Jag's looks, build, novelty factor, sound, presence etc. etc. will be the deciding factor. In many of these areas, I think the Jag really does beat the 991. I was of the opinion when the 991 was launched that Porsche had missed an opportunity to do something a little more radical with the design and whilst it's a technical and driving triumph (with some reservations) it does look bland (and the cab isn't exactly the best-proportioned car ever)!
So IMHO the Jag is only a 'fail' if ultimate driving dynamics and performance are your absolute priority. What we'll probably see (for now - I'm sure the coupe, manual gearbox and more powerful engines will change things radically) is the Jag just appealing to a slightly different buyer profile than the Porsche. I don't think JLR will have any problems selling them at all.
Given all the above, the fact the Jag isn't so very far away from the Porsche dynamically, straight out of the box, is quite an achievement for JLR. A 'well done, good first effort' is in order.

Oh I don't know about that. It's a looker, and very different to the back end of a 911 cab, which seems to split opinion. £15k cheaper list it sounded like, but the jag has a lot of kit, so the real-world price difference might be more like £20k, especially when you add PDK. And it's wider, so should feel more spacious inside than the 911.There's a lot of talk of the F having much more power (well it needs it to move the weight), much bigger brakes (well I guess that's to stop all that weight), etc, etc.
Different type of car, but I think they'll sell very well.

and have you seen the size of the boot in the Jag? It's tiny, and as a 2 seater only, luggage space will be a real problem.
A Jag that won't fit a couple of sets of golf clubs? Shurely shome mishtake?!S

What went wrong?! Rave reviews and you sit there asking what went wrong?
they do pay for the reviews you know lolwhen have you last seen a bad car review, every car gets a good review these days, it's a joke.
It's still for fat retired people imo, but it will sell as there are a lot of those ;-)
I look forward to seeing you in one :-p
I looked at and was then discussing the F type whilst doing some business with a Jaguar DP on Monday - they've sold out till September, and that's before tonight's launch event.
I first saw it in the metal in March in the concourse that goes from Geneva airport to Palexpo (where the actual show is held) - it looks good, but not a patch on the E-type (so to try to equate it with one just makes for an uphill struggle to me) and some of the proportions aren't quite right to my eye. I haven't read any press on it at all but I'd agree that the majority of buyers will have different values and views than most of us in this tiny corner of t'interweb. I fully expect to see plenty of them around locally and they should stand out more than a 911 in amongst all the McLarens, Evoques and new Range Rovers that seem to proliferate around these parts, and likely (and hopefully) in a more diverse range of colours than one usually sees with Porsches.

Porsche have been polishing the 911 for 50yrs.......the 'F' is new and only 'just' misses the mark, by the smallest of margins.
As a Brit, living in the weat midalnds I'm proud of Jaguar, we all should be. Why not....they employ a great deal of people in te UK and are getting bigger, surely that's a good thing right?
It disheartens me when all we do is slag off the competition just because it doesn't have a Porsche badge on it.
I can't wait to see the Coupe.....and the manual...........and the AWD!!

Now, a lighter, manual, used coupe may well interest me.Porsche have been polishing the 911 for 50yrs.......the 'F' is new and only 'just' misses the mark, by the smallest of margins.

What I don't understand, and I'm not a Jag fan, and I've never really looked at the range, but what I don't understand is, is where the XK and XKR models fit in anymore? Are these due a push upwards? And if so how much further North of the F-type V8 are they gonna be price-wise?
Seems like a confused offering from Jaguar to me. I'm not even that sold on the looks.

I would imagine that the XK range will disappear shortly.Seems like a confused offering from Jaguar to me. I'm not even that sold on the looks.
The 'F' is meant to bridge the gap between the 981 & 991 considering it's price.
IMHO - I wouldn't think Jaguar will replace the XK once it's put out to pasture.

They could lux it up a bit an build an XK replacement on the same chassis as the F. Change the lights, bumpers and doors. Whack on an extra £40k. I bet nobody's thought of that. Oh, hang on.....Actus Reus said:

With the v8s being 80k plus a few options, a 3 year old XKR is looking excellent value now at less than half of that. It's got the same engine with 15bhp more. I always liked XKR's myself. Wonder if they will firm up a bit on price now in the glow of the f-type?Seems like a confused offering from Jaguar to me. I'm not even that sold on the looks.
