I unplugged the sensor in the engine bay on the weekend so I don't have to press the exhaust "loud" button every time I go out for a drive. Someone had told me it makes the exhausts louder than even when you press the button, though I went for a drive and didn't notice this. I assume that isn't correct as the flaps are either open or closed I guess?

My only concern is how long I could leave it disabled from the sensor before the flaps seize up?

I do believe however that some kind of EU noise reg means that between 30-50mph the flaps adjust with either the button pressed or not to reduce the noise; you can hear the mechanics adjusting as a result...I've noticed this flap operation has now gone, which is nice biggrin

I did this on my C2S - coupled with the x51 manifolds - she was quite loud everywhere!

All I did was plug them back in for a run every 3 months or so and the valves were fine - but I would suggest putting some electrical tape over the plug socket as this had to be replaced due to water ingress when I sold her .... frown

It is not a sensor that you need to disconnect. You need to unplug the PSE electro valve.
Since you don't hear any difference, chances are high that you pulled the wrong plug.

I would imagine that most people who want the PSE loud all of the time to avoid the 'silent bit' from 30-45mph. Unplug the plug in the engine bay and you risk the actuators seizing up; snip the wire/diode and the quiet/loud button still works but it's a modification that's not so easily reversed. My recommendation is to bend the pin on the relay. Remove the relay for the PSE from the driver's footwell (marked "Abgasklappen"), bend pin 1 by 90 degrees then refit the relay. Job done.

I fitted the carnewal device to mine. Slots device between original connector as shown on above pic.

It just means that it stays on loud all the time after engine off and there is no cut out at lower speeds. I can then operate the valves using the remote every so often without needing to pull apart the engine access.

Works great.

No diode / relay in a 987.

Only takes 10 mins every 6 months to reconnect to keep the valves moving.

DS240 seems to have done the best of both worlds, though.

I have unplugged as per the image. The noise is there, as when you press the button, what I meant was that someone told me it would be even louder, which it clearly isn't, but the benefit is that the sound isn't reduced between 30-50mph for EU regs now, so no mechanical adjustment of the flaps whilst driving which is great.

My 996 has had the genuine PSE fitted and it's always loud unless I press the quiet button after turning the ignition on - I like it like this but it sounds like it's not normal?

By default, the PSE is quiet, apart from on starting up where it gives the noise, then the flaps close; you have to then press the button to make it loud again. That is the default, so maybe yours was switched around, which would be a better idea, doesn't make sense the way it is!

Ah I thought on the 996 - it was designed so that you pressed the button to quieten it, the reverse of all the others and the best way round IMHO!

Certainly on the the 987, 997, 981, 991 etc you press for noise and it defaults back to quiet when you switch it off. frown

I had PSE fitted by OPC on my previous car 996 C2. Can confirm that default setting was loud with switch pressed to put it into stealth mode. Exhaust would default to quiet mode between 30-45 (?). This is standard setting but doing the diode snip meant it was constantly on loud although I still had the option to press the button and go into stealth mode. Only time I used it that way was on the occasions when I went out early morning, or came home late at night.
My son own's the car now and everytime I see him in it he seems to be driving with the window half down - can't think why smile

A quick way of finding out if it's working is to ask your neighbours whether they heard you or not / how loud it was.

Would make no difference to my neighbours - the selection of Ferraris, Astons and V8 Jags on my lane make my unplugged exhaust sound like a pea shooter.

I'd prefer to use the button to be honest, but with the car going quiet between 30-50 I'll stick to leaving it unplugged for now wink Just been out and wrapped the connectors in amalgamating tape as it is a very good point about making it water-tight to prevent corrosion. Will plug it back in in a few months just to get the bafflers moving again!

The default on start up (or ignition) in a 996 is noisy, press button to silence, 997 default is quiet then press button to make loud.. I wish my 4S started up quiet...!
