I was considering a 997 from one of the well known dealers near London and pay around £29k for a 55 - 2006 car 50k miles c2s silver which i am told is in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition with a warranty etc. Then i started looking at what else was available and found a car for a fair bit less money, 05 silver c2s 78k, cosmetically it is a bit tatty but it drove very well, pse which has apparently been changed so you cannot turn it on and off with the sport button, i have been told this has been done on purpose so you can adjust the pasm independently and keep the smoother throttle response, does that sound right or is it just not working?

Having it inspected this week fingers crossed it is sound enough mechanically, i can live with the stone chips for now and a good polish would make a big difference. It has 1 OPC stamp @ 2330 miles 2007, then 3 @ Strasse 09 / 10 / 11 the last being a major. Has recent discs and pads on it. Spoken to Strasse they say the car always had whatever needed with the last owner, he put the majority of miles on it, before 2008 it did very little, sat nav shows it has been around Europe it looks like it has been enjoyed!

Any opinions welcome, I can afford the £29-30K car and will probably go that route if the inspection does not go well, but if i can get a good car for a chunk less cash i will be happy.

ps - is there a way i can find out the original options on the car from the vin number?

There's no such thing as a cheap Porsche.

Trust me.

That one at OPC is nice i dont want red though, nothing else the next are £35k. I hear what your saying re a cheap Porsche and am willing to spend £30k, but if this car has been well looked after it is surely not impossible it is a good car? Tempting fate there a bit

I would disregard the scaremongers and go for the cheaper car, assuming that what you are looking for is a good car to enjoy using without too much worries about piling up the miles and adding more stonechips etc. I say this as the owner of what will eventually be a high-ish mileage but well enjoyed and carefully looked after 997 (when it will be on sale in a few years).

if instead you're looking something tidier then perhaps spend the extra and get an OPC car.

I will use the car daily and it will get more chips, i want to enjoy it, do the odd trackday, drive it properly now and then. If the inspection checks out i am putting it on a maintenance plan with a local specialist so anything that needs doing will have to be done before they will accept it. Then i pay a monthly amount to cover 2 services a year plus any labour for other work, i just pay parts. I figure if they are happy to accept the car on this i will go for it and give it a bit of a polish.

On my 55 C2S, when you hit the Sport button on the dashboard, it automatically switches the PSM on. You can then switch off PSM and just enjoy the sharper throttle response and run on a normal suspension setting

The PSE thing could just be the brown plug in the engine compartment which, when disconnected, means it doesn't revert to silent mode when at 30mph (or some such city speed).

The option codes are listed in the service book, but iirc all the websites that linked codes to actual option named have been taken down as this is now something Porsche charges for.

Sound to me like a great buy (the 05 silver car).

You may have some luck here with the option codes but will need the ones specific to the car from the handbook:
