At the risk of suggesting something you are already aware of....
I had the same problem when my air con needed refilling. Does it make the noise with the air con off?
Not something I had thought of! I'm away for a couple of weeks but will check that on my return. Thanks for the reply...I had the same problem when my air con needed refilling. Does it make the noise with the air con off?
I noticed that the air-con wasn't icy cold (in fact it wasn't cold at all) and with it on the noise sounded like the motor was faulty.
i switched the air-con off and the noise went away.
After the refill it was cold and the noise had disappeared. I'm sure there was a thread on this but can't find it.

Is there a way of checking if the AC needs sorting? It seems to be working ok...
If the system is low on refrigerant the DME may have disable the compressor to prevent compressor damage due to the lack of enough refrigerant to circulate compressor oil.There is a test. Let's see...
close doors, windows, and roof
insert temp probe into center vent
measure ambient temp
open all dashboard vents
switch ignition on
press recirc button
set temp control to max cooling
switch fresh air stage to "4"
start engine
operate A/C while idling
set engine speed to 2K (at start of measurement)
ambient temp = center vent temp min/max
15 = 2/6
20 = 3/6.5
25 = 4/7
30 = 5/7.5
35 = 6/8.5
40 = 8/10
Note all temps in 'C'.
The above may not apply to all MYs. It came from a copy of the factory manual I have for Boxsters.
