Caman R owners ..... help please
Discussion
Hi guys,
Have found a great looking CR and had a test drive. Enjoyed it hugely and am going back for another look.
I have a couple of questions that I thought I`d put out to current owners if you dont mind. Planned useage will be high days and holidays , trackdays ( aprox 7 per year ) and blasting abroad :
1/ The tyres are shot and will be replaced before sale. I am used to Pilot supersports on my GT3 - does anyone run them on the CR or are standard fit tyres ( whatever they maybe ) good enough ??
2/ Does anyone change the Geo setup ( within current spec ) to a more track biased setting ?
3/ Any horrendous things I should look out for particular to the CR ? ( over revs are fine BTW )
4/ The car does not have PSE but it sounded pretty nice as is seeing as you sitting on the engine ! Is there an aftermarket mod or preferred 3rd party exhaust to replicate PSE ??
5/ Its a one owner car so I will be speaking with him / her about accidents etc
6/ The brakes felt terrible with no feel but I had just stepped out of my PCCB equipped car and the CR may have stood for a while. Initial bite was lacking. Is this normal and is there a preferred pad upgrade considering it will go on track ???
7/ What does sport Chrono PLUS give apart from the wart ?
There may be some more but I cant think of anything right now , but thanks in advance

1/ Most high performance tires are ok. Super sports have very good dry grip but not so on wet. Michelins are the preferred tire of choice for most enthusiasts but this car is also about fun, so Bridgestones e.g are ok. Bridgestones were actually used on the record lap on hockenheim in sport auto test and have good wet grip.
2/ Maxing out front camber makes a nice difference (maybe about 1 degree only though)
6/ Install 997.2 GT3 master cylinder.
7/ Better response and acceleration, must have on PDK cars no so on manual
I do not own CR (yet)

I have read if under OPC warranty just stick to N rated PS2's but I assume the Super Sports would probably be better
2/ Does anyone change the Geo setup ( within current spec ) to a more track biased setting ?
I would see if you like it as is first before playing around. I'm sure all those Porsche Engineers can't be all wrong
3/ Any horrendous things I should look out for particular to the CR ? ( over revs are fine BTW )
Not that I know of
4/ The car does not have PSE but it sounded pretty nice as is seeing as you sitting on the engine ! Is there an aftermarket mod or preferred 3rd party exhaust to replicate PSE ??
I have the PSE but do recall the std. one being fine sounding anyhow but perhaps not as loud. There are a few aftermarket solutions but some may lose that characteristic "Porsche" sound and you may get some drone at certain rpm

The std. brakes do lack some initial bite when driving slowly but I do find they have a lot of feel when pushing on
7/ What does sport Chrono PLUS give apart from the wart ?
It also has a more aggressive throttle mapping, harder redline and has a TC/DSC mode that gives you a little more sideways action without the full on beans when switched off.

PSS are awesome and no issue in the wet, they are better than N spec ps2 in the wet.
If you plan a lot of track days, I would be looking at Dunlop race maxx though, or cups.
2/ Does anyone change the Geo setup ( within current spec ) to a more track biased setting ?
Yes, but you will have to buy GT3 or RSS lca to get a bit more front camber
You can try maxing out the stock but better to do it right and fit lca
3/ Any horrendous things I should look out for particular to the CR ? ( over revs are fine BTW )
Just spec, for resale like Spyder wheels and buckets are a must imo
4/ The car does not have PSE but it sounded pretty nice as is seeing as you sitting on the engine ! Is there an aftermarket mod or preferred 3rd party exhaust to replicate PSE ??
Loads of after market ones or you can buy the oem R one
5/ Its a one owner car so I will be speaking with him / her about accidents etc
Good
6/ The brakes felt terrible with no feel but I had just stepped out of my PCCB equipped car and the CR may have stood for a while. Initial bite was lacking. Is this normal and is there a preferred pad upgrade considering it will go on track ???
Gt3 master and rs42 pads maybe rs29 pads or pf08 pads depending in use.
7/ What does sport Chrono PLUS give apart from the wart ?
Quite nice stops PSM cutting in so soon I had it retro fitted and the throttle is better imo.
There may be some more but I cant think of anything right now , but thanks in advance

4) Carnewall GT exhaust mod. Keeps all the character of the original (ie, still sounds like a Porsche), but makes it a lot more vocal. Still quiet when you're not thrapping it.

Cheers for the link. I've seen similar done to M3 back boxes and will give it a look. It seem quite noisy standard without pse so I'll see how I go.
Have you checked its not a car that suffers with the commonly reported "turbo lag" by some early CR owners?

Erm .... not sure what to make of that ! There is no throttle delay at all and I didnt have to bang the steering wheel to accelerate either .... bonus !http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ka4OsAQ_Wo

I don't think they will fit those as they are not N rated yet as far as I know but yes they would be my choice as I've got them on the GT3 and they are superb
You could always throw the argument at them that the Porsche Experience cars have them fitted so they must be ok! RudeDog said:

You are right to point out the throttle lag problems in the Cayman R but the link in your post is old and outdated. The links which show the throttle defect in all its glory are at the end of this post.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ka4OsAQ_Wo
It looks like the car in question is a manual transmission standard exhaust and these cars are worse affected. Porsche have inserted a throttle defect into the ECU at 50 km/h (32 mph on the speedo).
To sell a car with such a defect and knowingly withhold such information from the purchaser is why Porsche GB are facing litigation.
Prospective Cayman R (M6 standard exhaust) purchasers need to ask the OPC to explain the CR throttle malfunction. Ignore the sales guy and insist the test drive includes full throttle initiated from 32 mph in 3rd and 4th gear, as if at the end of speed limits, approach to slip roads etc.
Make sure you experience this throttle defect on your test drive before you buy. Porsche will give you no sympathy if you report this throttle defect after you have parted with your money. If such poor throttle response is perfectly benign and acceptable (as Porsche will tell you when you complain) then why are they so quiet about this in pre-sale. For 50k I expect a throttle response without such a deliberate defect.
The 2 video links below show, using real time OBD sensors, just how the ECU has been manipulated so that the throttle body disobeys throttle pedal inputs at 32 mph and stays closed when the pedal is depressed. This is a deliberate throttle malfunction that does not affect USA cars, where most CR are sold. There is no known cure for this throttle malfunction so make sure you can live with it.

Thanks for your post - that makes it much clearer. I have test driven it twice and did not notice anything untoward and we covered most speeds. I did not exactly settle on 31mph and then accelerate though. How can you tell if it has been removed or have Porsche come up with a fix. Car is an 11 plate if that makes any difference. I will email the dealer to confirm. It looks like the car in question is a manual trnasmission standard exhaust and these cars are worse affected. Porsche aren't going to issue a fix for this because they have deliberately created it. Does the car in question have manual transmission?
On a test drive it is easy to miss this problem because we all focus on performance and drive accordingly, and the sales guy will likely navigate away from speed limits and traffic.
I noticed this problem in my CR very soon after taking delivery and driving in normal conditions. I live in the country and often drive in and out of 30 mph limits through small villages. When accelerating out of the speed limits, the car loses power when the pedal goes down. This happens between about 30 and 34 mph. It is like Russian Roulette. Sometimes the car responds, sometimes it feels like the car has run out of petrol. It is very annoying. It also happens when least expected when navigating large roundabouts etc and the engine dies when you want to accelerate, unbalancing the car on the opposite wheels. Not good.
Test drive the CR again. Set the speedo to km/h and drive at 52 kmh (real speed = 50) at a constant speed in 4th gear and then floor it. Try it again in 3rd gear. This may not be the sort of high-revving driving the CR enjoys, but it is normal on public roads in short speed limits and this is definitely not a torque issue because the throttle body can be seen to refuse throttle inputs from the driver at this vehicle speed. It is NOT a function of engine speed but vehicle speed at which this throttle malfunction occurs. Hence it is not a "characteristic of the engine" which is what Porsche will tell you.
Can you disclose which OPC is supplying the car ?
Please let me know what OPC say about the throttle issues to see how it compares with my experiences.
Good Luck.

I`ve just found a huge long post on Evo about it and the guy seemed to get it resolved. I`m gonna have a read through all of it and familiarise myself with it. Yes the car is manual and yes the test drive was not conducted with economy in mind if you get my drift.Does the car in question have manual transmission?
