Wrestling conscience and common sense at the moment in deciding whether to go from a CR to a 997 GTS. Aside from the dynamic differences between the two models, one of the things staying my hand is the thought of spending a lot of money on what is, when all said and done, an obsolete car.

I have now driven one and liked it (not necessarily more than my Cayman - just different), but assuming an itch for a 911 that needs scratching, and given that the 991S is faster round the Nurburgring than a 997 GT3, would I be better advised waiting a year for when the 991s have come down in value?

Anyone caring to offer a thought would be gratefully received.

It's a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things but the thing that strikes me most when sitting in a 997 vs 991 is just how much the interior has come on. It makes the previous model seem very low rent. In that respect, it's behind indeed. The price of progress.

The 911 is an amazingly easy car to drive, but at this stage has less character than the 997. If I was doing 100miles+ a day, it would be the 991. But for less, I'd rather have the 997.

The 997 is classic in the making. I like the 2GTS. at these prices.

Unfortunately, the 991 makes even the 997.2 feel dated.
I much prefer the new interior, and the PDK and chrono equipped S is in a different league to its predecessor.

The question is, is the 30k premium over a 3 year old gen2 PDK worth paying?

In terms of "feel" the 997 will always be an immensely satisfying tool - the feedback is outstanding - but if it's only raw speed and refinement (plus the new look interior) that you're after .... the 991 wins.

After spending a weekend with one this is how I felt. It didn't seem anywhere involving enough at remotely legal speeds to spend that kind of money on for a weekend toy.

I didn't feel the same way about the new 981 Cayman though, that I liked but it was only the usual driving 30 minutes road test.

The CR is also an obsolete car since the 981 was released, and there will always be a newer model of any car given a few years. If the concern is that the 997 is 'obsolete', then surely there is no option other than the latest/greatest 991?

Of course, there are many brilliant obsolete 911s to own and drive going back to the pre-impact bumper 911s of the early '70s...

At OPC prices, between 27k and 30k difference.
2010 Gen2 PDK can be bought for about £45k.
6 month old C2S PDK, £75k ish.

porsche have always had low rent interiors the new one is the sign of the vw takeover and so unporsche like.was the 993 left behind when the 996 arrived?i think the same can be said of the 991/997.2 debate?imho prices secondhand will soon be nearly equal ie 2011 gts circa £58k and 2012 991s £62k.same can be said for the 981s with second hand values dipping close to that of a spyder.and in the long term any 9*7.2 will be more sort after.

All sensible replies, for which many thanks. Another question then. Assuming the decision was made to go for a GTS 2 (manual), would it be worth waiting to find one with sports suspension and slippy diff?

Disappointed they do not have LSD as standard. Is the sports suspension about an inch lower?

SPASM with be an extra 10mm drop over a normal PASM equipped car. Finding a manual one cuts out the vast majority of cars. Looking for SPASM too may mean quite a wait.

I would go for one with these, but also one without the centrelock wheel hubs...very few came without them and they're a PITA.

no i said any 9*7.2 which means 987.2 and 997.2 but mainly the run out models ie CR spyder GTS and black editions.it is already happening in the short term with prices of nearly new 991/981 models falling close to 9*7.2 specials.the other reason i said this the generation 2 porsches are one of the lowest production/sales since the 993 and may be even lower than that.
how many 997.2s for sale and how many 991s on the opc?
45 997.2s and 58 991s
with only 17 997.2s under 3 years old and less than 20k miles

I agree re the runout specials, but you are not comparing like for like.

As far as the availability of 997.2s, I suspect it has little to do with how sought after they are vs 991s, and more that people aren't willing to make the 30k leap from 997 to 991. When the gap gets smaller, I expect most people who are able, will make the jump.

In a stronger economy, I expect the OPCs would have significantly more 997s, px'd for 991s.

I also think plenty of Cayman 987 owners are going to move across to 981s....

I prefer the 991S over all 997s except the GT3/RS.

I personally don't think the GTS is a patch on it having lived with both.
