Thinking of taking the ferry from Wales to Dublin and touring both South and Northern Ireland. Dont know the place at all and looking for tips on routes and good places to stay.

For the best scenery, head out of Dublin to Cork, then pick up the coastal roads and just follow the coastline. All of it is great, with plenty of towns for stopovers, such as Tralee, Galway, Clifden, Westport, then either head up to Donegal, or cut accross to Enniskillen, heading to Portstewart, Bushmills, BallyCastle & Antrim coast road to Belfast. Good roads from thetr back to Dublin, or take in a loop around Strangford Lough/Portaferry, Newcastle & on to Dublin.

Can't go wrong!!!smile

From Dublin go south - either along the coast or use the motorway (which would allow a stop in Kilkenny, which has a lot to see and do) and try the Cliff House in Ardmore, County Waterford. It has a Michelin starred restaurant.

It's about an hour from there on to Cork and you can stay there or press on to Killarney. Up the west coast there are a lot of twisty, scenic roads - Clifden to Wesport for e.g. I always stay with my brother near Kinsale, so don't have any experiences of staying round here.

Near Sligo is Markree Castle which is a good place to stay if you're into informality in a castle and the food is good.

In Donegal I'd recommend Lough Eske Castle - go through Barnes Gap both directions and do a figure 8 round the coast and taking in N56 and R251 - Dunlewey/Glenveagh/Muckish Gap and then back round.

In the north - The Beech Hill Country House near Londonderry or the Bushmills Inn would allow you to tour the North Coast.

There are lots of hotels in Belfast. The Clandeboye Lodge is nearer to Bangor but good value and easy parking.

It's about two hours from Belfast back to the ferry.

Without knowing your time scale or budget it's hard to know - these are all good places.

All of the above, I live here ! And if you re in Ireland next Friday we have a PCI Trackday at Mondello, drop along and say hello.

If staying in Dublin the Radisson Blu Hotel St Helens in Stillorgan is nice and good parking.
