Hi guys

I have been thinking about a getting a trackday car based on a 964 or possibly a 3.2 for a few months now. I have previously owned an `86 Carrera 3.2 SSE coupe road car, a `94 993 C2 (RS clone) road car and my current P car is an `04 996 GT3 Mk2 which I love and want to hold on to.

I have never owned a 964, but I have always really like the look of them and much more so recently. Thinking (dreaming) about my project car... yes, you know the thing a nice C2 coupe, manual, very cheap, strip it, get it dipped and start from scratch building the spec. that I want it to be.

But then you do the maths, then look around a bit and it occurs to me that buying something with the all or most of the work done already might make a better financial proposition.

Take these two for instance, both seem to have had £££ spent already and they look as though with a few personal additions and you are ready to go...

Thoughts please, `pro and cons` welcomed and if anyone owns or knows either car, I would be very interested in more information. I saw the grey car at the recent RS Day at Oulton and it looked pretty nice to me...

Thanks in advance...

You can easily spend 50k building one www.cagedcar.com

When you look at the price of the cars you have posted it makes sense to buy something someone has already put money into. Having said that a lot of people enjoy the project.

^^^ What Lee says. It's always cheaper to buy one that someone has done all the work, rather than build it yourself but it's nice to develop something yourself from scratch.

I'm pretty sure that first car is the one that's had a lhd to rhd conversion. I definitely recognise that reg number.

My choice would be a 964 over an impact bumper car but that's just what I prefer. smile

Red one would be my choice and seems very fairly priced.

The red car says it was built to race in the Club Championship for 2006 but has seen "little" race use. I've raced in that since 2005 and I'm sure I've never seen that car on the grid scratchchin

Failed to make reserve at recent silver stone auctions. Top bid 26k. Can prob be secured for high 20's.

Speak to RPM the vendors. They have worked on it themselves - they do a lot of support work for amateur racers.

They've also looked after my 993 for almost 10 years..

Yes it's a LHD to RHD conversion but if you're after a car to enjoy on track (and not one as an investment) it will deliver what you want. Belongs to Paul Clare who also owns a 964 cup. E-mail me through my profile and I'll put you in contact.

p.s. if I'm slow to reply, it's because we're off to Spa tomorrow. smile

Id view any LHD to RHD conversion with a great deal of suspicion. It may have been unpicked and re-welded to a standard that the factory can only dream of, but it is more likely to have a flexi-bulkhead and wobby steering and brakes that you cant ever get to the bottom of.

The former I have read about in one magazine article 10+yrs ago and the latter I have seen several times...

Give Andy at RPM a ring. They have looked after this car for ages and converted it. I have the tool roll from it as mine had things missing :-)

I don't think it ever got the Porsche championship but it has been raced and tracked, there are pictures of it on track on the wall in RPM. They are good guys having looked after my car for the last 8 years.

have a look at www.countryporsche.com in the section "previously owned" There's a modified 964 there. Some time ago Shirleys of Meriden had a red one that had had similar work done

You're off with Ken & the flotilla of 9E prepped 964's then. Enjoy!

OP, they both look really appealing and not just dedicated track cars either. £20k seems sensible money for either, but clearly a full PPI is more essential on these than most other cars.

I borrowed a 964 road car for a few laps of Sepang, I was amazed at how unsuitable it was for the track, I would not want to pay to build one into a decent track car.
