Evening all. I have just purchased my 996 turbo (04 plate), and the only things I didn't check are making me scratch my head and I'd love your help.

In all the cars I tested I never tried the reverse gear. On my one finding reverse feels vague, i.e. there is not lifting of the gear knob or pushing down like on other cars if you want to select reverse. Instead, you feel the entry to reverse on the left hand side of the gate. Is this normal?

Second thing is the cd stacker unit in the boot. I can eject the cd cassette and reload it, and the changer goes through the motions of checking each one, but when I select cd changer on the pcm, it cannot detect the cd changer at all. I have retested but putting the cd's in the opposite waynin case I loaded them the wrong way round, but no change. Any help would be appreciated.

For reference, here is my new toy.

Hi,

Well done on buying one of the best value pound for BHP cars around!

The reverse gear selection sounds ok, you shoukd feel more resistance into reverse than over to first.

Cd fault could be the changer is broken or there is something that has taken the cd changers place like an ipod interface...or phone kit.

Reverse selection in the Turbo requires some effort. There is some kind of a lockout that one has to overcome in order to get the lever over so he can select reverse.

While there is some effort required I do not find it excessive.

You might want to have the shifter linkage checked. The shifter on the Turbo failed -- the ball joint at the end cracked -- and left the tranny stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear on the side of the road.

Fortunately I managed to shove in the clutch and coast around a turn and pull over onto a residential side street and legally park the car.

I had the 997 shifter installed which made for some improvement in the Turbo's shifting.

For the CD stacker or magazine issues what I have found "fixes" mine when it fails to work is to remove the unit and then reinsert the unit and make sure it is securely reinserted.

Agree with this and just to add that I had a similar fault with the cd and after much faffing around I ended up buying a new CDC-4 from OPC. They are sold on a exchange basis for your dodgy old one. You could try unplugging the thing and checking the optical cable isn't snagged, unbolt it from its bracket first to access the power and optical cables.

ETA, You could also try resetting the PCM by pressing 1,4 & 8 simultaneously, probably won't cure anything but worth a go.

Reverse sounds fine, takes a while getting used to the box, careful not to get it in reverse when trying to select 1st to pull away....

CD changer, make sure you have the CDs up the right way, I didn't and couldn't work out why it didn't work!

Thanks all. Removed all the boot trim to see what I could see, before realising that on the cd cassette, there is a sticker pressumably from Porsche talking about a Cdc ISSUE. Damn it, looks like a warranty job.

Aah well, good job I took it for a nice drive last night and indulged myself in the masses of power.

Mines always a challenge to get into reverse if it has been sitting a while. It has a short shift kit, which probably doesn't help

I had hope for decent weather tomorrow or Sunday as I've not driven it for ages, roll on a dry spell, it feels like it has been raining in the UK for about 7 months (I know it can be driven in the wet, but it's more fun in the dry with the windows open)

Right. I have re-removed all the boot trim and disconnected the cd changer, cleaned the terminals, reconnected and retried the PCM. Made no difference, still cannot detect the cd changer cassette. Does anyone know what OPC charge for exchange items?

My CD changer doesn't work properly in my Cayenne - usually fails to find any CDs although occasionally will find one or two.

I solved it by installing Dension - however, before I did that I did a search on the problem. I found one post suggesting that if you open the changer up, that there are small screws inside you can turn very slightly to re-align the laser and that can solve the problem.

Since it currently doesn't work at all - might be worth a go. I can't remember where I found the info, but I do remember it said it should be very small turns.

I think my CDC-4 was around 260 inc VAT.
