Can anybody offer some advice on the safest 997 to buy with regards depreciation? I'm looking for a low mileage Gen 2 car with a low mileage, probably to keep for about three years or so.

Be grateful of any pointers.

The easy answer is an earlier 997 Carrera S at about £20-25k ( in the right spec ), the more you spend them more it will depreciate, unless you go GT3 IMO, a gen 2 car will ultimately end up at the same point as the gen 1 cars I think

A 997t could depreciate at a slower rate, but potential running costs may negate any savings

Point taken but assuming that it is a recentish Gen 2 car what would be a better spec thinking ahead to the point of resale?

At a guess looking forward 3 years, a decent spec and condition 2005 C2S with 40k miles is currently £35k from an OPC and around £30k private. In 3 years with 50k miles it'll probably be worth £22k-£25k. I'm sure somebody will post a link to a car for £22k now on EBay but it's probably brown, tiptronic, no options, warranty and 70k mileage.

Add about £10k to the above for each stage on a Gen2 997 S.

In my opinion the 997.1 will never fall as low as a 996 and a 997.2 will never fall as low as a 997.1. This is my guess anyway.

Gen 2 with PDK would be safest bet. Make sure it has decent spec and nav (they hardly cost more). I think C2S and C4S are the ones to look at, but I would say that.

Agree with all above ,I will consider a Gen2 next when I shall PX my Gen1 C2S but not yet as They need another years depreciation for me to make the balance to find around the 10k mark for a lowish mileage car and i have a years warranty to run.
The big price of a 991 will also slow the drop on late 997s Ithink especially the GTS unfortunately as I really fancy one!!!

The simple answer to your question is GT3. That will depreciate the lowest percentage, but may be similar in terms of actual loss to a 40k S.

If you bought private carefully and sold privately, you might restrict the depreciation to about 15k. I would say that is the best case scenario though. Worst case via an opc could be 25k.

Sport Classic might be a safe bet? You know, ltd edition an'all that... ;-)

I did find myself looking at a speed yellow 997GTS the other day but at 70k the depreciation scares me :-(

Yes, forgot about the SC! I guess the RS would be better too? Percentage-wise.

Ive no doubt that the GTS is fantastic, but 70k!!! eek You can get a lightly used 991 for that!

So to sum up - Gen 2 Pdk Carrera 2 with low miles price now about 45k will be worth about £30k in three years with moderate miles added.

That seems good value to me at about £5k depreciation per annum and I am assuming reasonable running costs with careful use these days.

Only other question is if it worth buying from a Porsche Centre or cheaper privately.

I always have purchased on the basis that a car (say 3-4 years old) will lose half the value of what I (note I) paid for it over three years...never been that far off. I reckon something you buy at 45k today would be worth around 25k in 3 years time...however that's jus my view.

I think that is about right. From my experience it is always a bit worse than you'd expect if you buy a modern car. Its impossible to know where we'll all be in four years time but its comforting that the 991 is not poles apart from the 997 in looks.

pretty realistic view and that's depending on you purchasing the desirable models... otherwise, it would likely be worse.

I couldn't find any private ones cheap enough to justify. They seemed just below OPC money, but no 2 year warranty and coffee.

Agree - it seems private buyers are just trying to get the same as you would pay at an OPC

If you decide to go PDK, don't forget that when fist launched there were no flappy paddles fitted - non flappy paddle units will be significantly less attractive to the market.

I would have thought a GTS would be a pretty good buy, certainly a good spec and the best performance outside of a GT3 or Turbo.
