I'd like to get a sports exhaust for my 944 S2. Maybe headers too.

It needs to be street legal but apart from that I'm just looking for extra horsepower.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

I think the standard exhaust and manifold is pretty efficient.

Not sure an exhaust will give you much really.

Is the cat still on it? A standard chip with a de-cat system is about all you can do easily, short of supercharging it!

The Promax one seems to be fine.

Failing that a top end rebuild and new head gasket can recover some lost ponies. TBH most of it is just keeping everything tip top such as the dizzy cap, rotor arm, coil and fuel pump. All of these things are consumables on my race car. It has made a solid 220 Bhp btw on 3 different visits to the rolling road now. I think most would be surprised how strong the S2 lump pulls when tip top.

I am not convinced different exhausts make a positive difference. I fitted a new dansk rear system to my race car and it made exactly the same Bhp on the rollers as it did with the original system. The main advantage was a drop in weight and of course it looks much nicer and is a bit louder, on a road car the few Kg difference would be a complete waste of time. Apart from ditching the cat I honestly don't think there are gains to be made in the exhaust system unless one was re-tuning it to make power in a different range to standard. The cat section is also very heavy btw so well worth ditching.

I should add that any new exhaust is likely to be better than a 20 yr old one. I think this is at the heart of why some believe the Dansk system is worth several Bhp.

Is it legal to get rid of the cat? Does its removal mean changing anything else?

Yep, all pre-'93 cars can have the cat removed. Most S2s will have had it done by now, as few cats will have lasted nearly 25 years. Mine's still there, for some reason, but it's not high on my list of priorities as refreshing the suspension will have FAR more effect. And that budget just got spent on the bodywork; having solid sills is more important than anything else. I've even planned a HG change ahead of anything like a de-cat, it's just not going to make a huge difference.

Changing anything else? I'd go for the chip at the same time. No real power gain, but more linear delivery. And that's on an engine that pulls like a truck already.

So how do you de-cat? Do you have to replace it with some sort of muffler or just a piece of pipe? Does anyone sell a replacement? I don't think Danske make anything for that.

As I said, the Promax option is well-proven.

Combined with the chip, you get a bolt-on improvement with no hassle. Not a huge performance upgrade, but there should be more low-down torque, smoothing the power delivery out a bit.

Not trying to sell Promax, but you could do worse than speak to them, or one of the other 944 experts, for advice before you spend any money! There are so few options that will make a difference on an S2 that it's worth researching, not getting sucked in by impossible claims.

If you want to go completely mad, Peter Empson's build of a supercharged S2 engine in his Lux shell makes very good reading.

If you want to go faster then the cheapest upgrade will be to sell the S2 and buy a Turbo!

In order to make any normally aspirated Frontrunner faster you will need to replace the inlet tract, camshafts and the ECU. What Porsche describe as tuning for torque and drivability equates to hobbling the engine by most peoples reckoning. With this fellows ECU you may be able to get better results without new cams. I would happily recommend him (Tom).

All a new exhaust will do is make the car sound nicer and save a good deal of weight. You might gain a few BHP but itll mostly be placebo.

As Neil has stated above, the 16v cylinder heads respond well to a rebuild. You may be running around with a great less power than Porsche intended. It isnt uncommon for the 2.5l 16v S to have less than the 165BHP that the 8v cars had, all as a result of the head!

Id suggest EMC for a rebuild.

The Colin Champman route of added lightness makes a massive difference if one stays with the S2. Honestly road going cars just feel incredibly boring after the experience of my race car. I actually prefer driving around in my old Range Rover to the 968 for example.

Whicxh Id translate as buy a Dansk and start saving up for the fortune in new suspension components that it will need.
