im thinking of treating myself to a 996 within the next 6 months or so. i would really like a turbo, but for the min i am looking for a Manual 996 coupe preferably the carrera 2! rather than the 4wd models.

i also have a 944 turbo which im restoring, the carrera would be more of a daily car tbh.

differences between the 3.4 and 3.6 engine? and is the 3.6 the one to go for? i think i read the 3.4 was more prone to ims failure?

most important things to look out for? i can carry out all mechanical work myself so not worried about doing jobs on the car, but just what to look out for when buying a 996.

any advise welcome really! cant wait to get into a 911!

many thanks
nick

forgot to say! i dont mind taking a risk! so my budget is pretty wide. at the same time i dont want to spend top money, as i will be looking to get into a turbo in a year or 2 anyway. just want something to fill the gap really. i already have the 944 turbo im fully restoring, and a dedicated mitsubishi evo track car, so just after a nice road car really.

budget 8k-14k (i know its pretty wide, but im a risk taker and happy to carry out any remedial work needed on a cheaper car!)

thanks
nick

It's worth doing a search of the forum - there have been loads of threads on this recently. It doesn't sound like the kind of advice you'd be keen to take but it's definitely worth getting an inspection by a good specialist done.

I have just bought a 2002 911 996, and had it inspected by a Porsche independant garage. It was well worth the money, as all the issues they picked up were rectified by the car sales company I bought it from. Rather than take a risk, it might be better to spend a couple hundred pounds on an inspection.
