Don't know if many of you noticed that this RS:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

sold this morning...went up last night. Word has it that it went for asking...nice car.

Impact of flappy-paddle 991 GT3 perhaps...but as an RS owner myself I'm delighted to see the prices going the other way again. Certainly looks to be safe-ish place for one's cash.

I have a 3.8 RS also. Still, my intention is to hang on to it permanently. Its an interesting experience to simply keep a car all the way from being a performance standard to becoming a classic, when its once-spectacular numbers have been long eclipsed by new developments. I see it as becoming a valued old friend in the future. If it depreciates or even increases in value over time, so be it.

I'd love to do this - sadly I have to settle for buying a car that someone else has owned for 23 years before me -

I agree with you both...I plan (and hope) I am able to do the same. It doesn't owe me anything so I hope I don't have to sell it because I need the cash at some point for something unplanned. If it does appreciate or stabilise over the years that will be bonus.

Just goes to show cars with the right spec and provenance sell quickly...

It's a very interesting subject. I'm biased as I gave 100k for my RS last June, and prior to the 991 GT3 news I valued it at high 70s in the trade.

Three reasons why I think the 7.2 GT3RS is the next 2.7RS(tongue in cheek) :

1. PDK only. Crazy for a road car, the 'box in the RS is simply sublime.
2. DFI. Good enough for the road car, but not good enough for competition. I'll pass thanks.
3. Cup car gets fettled 3.8 above the 4.0................something wrong with the 4.0 engine?

Whatever, I just love driving it, and will as long as the wolf isn't at the door.

Think the new car will be great but the 997 gt models are very special will be different enough to be worth Holding on to . I intend to keep my 4.0 till the end of time .

Ah the age old I'm keeping it forever thread.

For the umpteenth time I find myself telling friends (and OH) that this one I'm keeping. The latest, greatest, newest wont turn my head.

Mmmm. Just wonder how much more money I'd have in the bank if I'd just kept a few of them.

So at the risk of repeating myself this time its staying wink

Been there and done that with some other metal, sowed some wild oats, gone back to the one that has always felt closest to my heart. Seems its a case of picking your GT3, getting a good one and enjoying it for a long time.

Yes, I spotted this and I was stunned when it went so quickly. It reminded me of our recent conversation and your prediction... Hopefully, it will be spot on!

And the owner lost a load given the big spec.

It would be nice to have an RS for 10-50 years... Only problem is they cost a bit to maintain as they get older.

Doesn't seem that big a spec.

Makes the Leeds car look less expensive than it did 24 hours ago.

I love my 3.8 it's not going anywhere. Made the mistake of selling my old beloved a before and always missed them. It's not happening again with this car. Love it way too much.

It may be a classic, it may not. Who cares if its a keeper!

I think youre right, it will go down as the car that put two fingers up to the 'tech for techs sake' ethos, and went with what drivers who love driving wanted.

Surely that was the 996 RS.

Although we all like to pretend otherwise the 997 GT3 is pretty tech laden wink

Agreed. The 996 RS will be the more sought after, not the 997 RS. They both aren't 'classics' though IMO.

The days of buying a potential classic disappeared many years ago IMO.

Good as it is technically, there's too many about when compared to a decent 996RS.

Your typical 'must have now' boys will drop their 997RS in favour of the 991 whatever is said now. A few, very few, will keep theirs but certainly not enough to make it a 'classic' or some sort of 'last a a dying breed' etc.
