I have over the years owned a number of Porsche cars starting with 924's, 944's a 911SC and lastly a 996 Carrera, which I bought new and kept for 9 years.

Personal circumstance changed so the Porsche had to go. I'm now back on track and have £50/55k available for my new car.

Options are do I go for a new 981(Boxster/Cayman or fulfill a long held dream of owning a Gen 1 Turbo? Depreciation and running costs are a factor as is the overall ownership experience.

I'm thinking the Turbo will depreciate the least over, say, three years, and would expect this would be negated by extra running costs etc?

We all know how much the heart influences the head thus my post is to help me come to the right decision.

I hope to try both at my local OPC in the next few weeks so any thoughts advice in the mean time would be appreciated.

I recently tried a 996 C4S at Paul Stevens, very impressive but not for me. A 997 C2/4 may be another option but the depreciation? ...

..If depreciation is the key factor, go gen1 7-GT3, I think gen1 burto's have a way to fall yet.
Any C2/C4 will cost you big over 3 years on the residual value.

If you do get a turbo have a decent test drive if you haven't had one before, I bought one and sold it quite quickly becuase it was too capable and too quiet, but I can see why others would like it.

If you're thinking turbo now you'll always be thinking "what if I'd got a turbo?" And never be happy, especially if you go the boxster route. Even a carrera won't come close speed wise.

997Cs don't get much closer even to 996 turbos never mind the 997.

Depreciation wise I don't know but you have to imagine anything drysump has to fare better in the longterm than the carrera with it's reputation for costing money bore/shaft/seal wise.

My advice: turbo. No question.

I'm in the same situation, but dead set on getting another 993 turbo bounce. I know it's not as competant as most later models, but heck, for me, they look sooooo good and has great driver feel. Oh, and will take my young lads in the back, has plenty of luggage space, can do 28mpg (with a very light foot on a long motorway run), don't depreciate, has 4 wheel drive for inclement weather...... Oh, OK, go for a 997 turbo..........

I'd say go turbo, unless its to use as a toy. Then the right choice has to be a 96 GT2.

If i needed or used the back seats i would get a 97.1 Turbo, if i didnt, it would be a 97.1 GT3! Either way you cant really go wrong, IMO

+1 I had a gen 1 turbo only kept it for 10 months and lost a small fortune! Just bought a gen 1 GT3 its brilliant!

I had the exact same dilemma and went for the 997 Turbo. I'd love a GT3, but at this stage of life with commuting and nippers to consider, the Turbo was a much better ownership proposition.

Much as I would have loved the GT3, it would have been a pain in the ass...

The Turbo will depreciate heavily, they all do. To be fair the bulk of the depreciating has been done on the 997.1 Turbo, but they will still drop by the x 1000... It's still an unbelievable car though!

Echoing other posters, it has to be a GT3. 911V have an a great rep too...

i'd go along with that, my C2S lost less than £5k a year in depreciation during my ownership, however the running costs were high, warranty, brakes, clutch, battery, and at the end of the day was an old car.. i except my 981 to cost me about the same in deprecation as the C2S running costs and depreciation combined... but its brand spanking new smile i think a turbo will depreciate at the same rate as the 996 turbo so that gives u a idea where they are heading... i assume your going OPC warranty? there's a awful lot of potential costs hiding round the corner on a 40,000 mile 997, as i round out!

At least you managed 10 months, I only managed 2! Not my cup of tea at all.

Just a minor point - in a very well written and informative advert, it says the following:

4 x new tyres (Michelin Super Sports N1)

I thought Porsche N-rated Super Sport tyres were not yet available for the 997?
???
