Hi,

I am new to the forum and have been searching around as I am looking to buy a 2.7 Cayman 07/08 plate.I have seen a few advertised with very reasonable mileage. Are there any problem areas that I should be looking at closely ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated on problem areas and what extras are worth having.Thanks.

The 2.7 of that age is one of the most reliable ones. Good history and condition is the most important thing. I've heard of power steering rack failures buy had no issues myself. Should be a safe buy. Try finding one with some Porsche warranty remaining for peace of mind.

2 years or 20000 miles whichever comes first for service intervals although alot will get services or have oil changed at least annually. The major service comes every 4 years so the cars you are looking at should have had a minor and major and depending what year you are looking at may have another minor coming up this year.

I agree with everything thats been said already.

I've been running a 2007 2.7 for the last two years and 20,000 miles without a hint of trouble.

I follow the service schedule but do every service at 10,000 mile intervals instead of the 20,000 miles suggested by Porsche, just my choice and whilst I don't track my car it gets driven properly.

If you've any questions that haven't been answered or you'd like more of a chat about running and owning drop me a PM.

Indy servicing isn't too bad and I've got a Warranty Direct warranty just in case, I hope I'll never need it!

It is, I have to say,the best of the Porsches I've owned and I love it!

Its pretty simple really, Porsche don't have the best record when it comes to engine reliability and a lot of people believe this is not helped by 20k intervals between oil changes.

Oil looses its ability to protect/lubricate the engine as well as it ages, most oils protection abilities reduce with miles, certainly after 10,000 miles the oil is not protecting as well as it did when it was fresh, at 20,000 miles its protection ability will be vastly reduced.

If you want to safeguard against bore scoring, engine failures then doing more frequent oil changes cost very little and is a simple task, so why not do it.

For reference I change the oil and filter in my 911 every 5000-6000 miles, it cost me less than £100, but if it means my engine will happily breeze past 100k miles problem free or certainly help it do so then why not do it. smile

Have to say.Having two aircooled VW's I would probably err on the side of caution with oil services. Thanks all again.
