My car has manual transmission and electric parking brake - with "Hold" and "Drive-off Assistant" functions.

  • "Drive-off Assistant" automatically releases the parking brake when I drive off after applying it at e.g. a set of traffic lights.
  • "Hold" should automatically hold the car stationary on slopes. Typically it doesn't work because the slope is not steep enough to activate the system and I have to apply the parking brake manually.
BUT - and this is the really stupid part - the Hold function can't be trusted so you get in the habit of applying the parking brake when stopped on any slope. However, if I apply the parking brake on a slope where the car unusually and silently decides to activate the Hold feature, Drive-off Assistant will not work and the car just stalls when I try to move off because the parking brake will not release.

This electric parking brake system really is the most hateful piece of equipment ever fitted to a car.

I have to say again, I really don't have a problem with the parking brake or the hill-hold function. Nor has anyone else that I have let drive my car. I have certainly never stalled the car because of those features.

I don't want to be too patronising but are you sure it isn't you?

Nor me to be honest although I have yet to see the hill hold feature. Apply parking brake and it disengages when I start to pull away (also on a manual car). Granted it can be a little jerky sometimes as if it hasn't released it quickly enough but not too much of an issue. My biggest gripe is that it's a push on pull off system which is opposite to every other electric system I've used to date.

Need to go and find a steep enough hill to test this "feature" however

I really don't find these features problematic at all. The parking brake is simply a matter of getting used to the new button location and reversing the operation (pull to release etc). The hill hold makes for very smooth getaways and is in constant use in my part of the world (the hilly north). I have PDK which possibly integrates better but I don't recall it troubling me on my manual 997.2.

I'm within you mate. Just what was wrong with the traditional handbrake.

If it ain't broke etc etc

Mine did break - cannot believe the teeth on the ratchet are plastic!

Oh and 940 Gbp and a 3 month wait for a new one.

This is totally unacceptable. If the OP has a problem, then there's a problem - even if he's not the best at using it. And they seemingly break!

I think he is referring to the traditional handbrake that broke not the electric system that replaced it

I think NSM is saying his old style handbrake broke if I am not mistaken.

Sorry - it does read like that. A bit too keen to get the knife into the electric system. Not sure I like the sound of plastic teeth either way!

My daily is an Audi currently and it has the same sort of thing. I find it quite annoying as you never know when the thing will release by itself and let you drive away. Mine is an auto so stalling is not a problem but you end up pogoing backwards and forwards. I imagine it would be pretty easy to stall a manual car in the same situation.

Does seem a strange direction for Porsche to go but they must have done the maths and maybe its lighter or cheaper to manufacture or they just wanted to keep up with the jones`.

I've had no problems at all with the hill hold, but then it's a PDK so I expect it integrates better.

It's taken 5000 miles for me to just *start* to get the hang of push on / pull off though.

We have that hill hold crap on the commander in chiefs cayenne and it is crap . Hold at the wrong time then confuses the stop start thing and you have to put car in " p" and manually start it . Absolutely useless , horrid , horrid thing .

And there's more.....

Stopped the car (remember it's a manual gearbox), removed key and got out. Rolled the car slightly forward by hand and then pushed on the parking brake

Nothing

So the ultimate brilliance is you can't apply the emergency parking brake unless the ignition is switched on, unlike every car I've ever owned, driven or heard of before.

First dipsticks, now handbrakes. I'm driving a courtesy car boxster pdk at the moment, and I feel like a dinosaur in this thing.. They'll be getting rid of the steering wheel next!
