Air Cooled Advice
Discussion
Got a budget of around £20k and am looking for some advice please
Never had air cooled before (had 996, 997 and just got shot of a 997 turbo - all were daily drivers) and would like to get something for the weekends only.
Am I mad to consider a 930 or 964?
Better to stay safe ish with a 993?
Is £20k a decent enough budget to get a decent motor?
I don't have the time or skills to wield a spanner btw
Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul, as a starter for ten you do need to drive as many of your chosen examples as you can. I think for your budget it would be difficult to find a very good 930 and nothing is "safe bet" a full Pre purchase inspection is a must via a knowledgeable specialist if possible. They all offer a different driving experience and there are a host of views available if you search the forums, but sure lots will chip in shortly
964, 993 C2/4 are available within budget and don't rule out a 3.2 Carrera good luck finding one as its all part of the fun.

If I had 20K to spend today. I'd be looking for a well serviced high mileage 993 over a 964. That's purely down to value for money.
People are trying very hard to raise the values of 964s (and who can blame them, they are great cars) but for 20K it seems a good but high mileage 993 is attainable with a rock solid history; where there seems alot of 964s that are around 20K that do not, unless your lucky. This could be down to the fact that a few years back 964s were not the price they are now, and were pretty much universally unloved, and people didn't keep up with the service schedule. (I loved mine though)
Also rust for now at least, is more of an issue on a 964.

£20k is a solid budget for a nice 964 though prices are firming. Good thread on rennlist on 964s coming up for sale. Should give you a flavour on pricing. Nice 993s still seem to be £23k +

Of course it is a Targa which is a separate debate...

You will be able to get a good 3.2, 964 or 993 for 20k. Not mint or low mileage, but good. Oh and dont worry about a few miles, its only important to values.
Obviously there are many things to check for and if you are not confident yourself, get an inspection or stick to the trusted dealers.
Not only are there of course model specific things you need to check, more importantly, these are all now old cars and bodywork/rust needs to be your priority.
Finally, all 3 models, whilst all related are quite different so you need to try a few to see which floats your boat.
