Porsche 944 prices are going mental! Whats happening?
Discussion
I have to comment on the fact that in the last 12 months and specifically in the last 6 months 944 s2 &
Turbo models have been steadily rising, in fact they have about doubled for good examples in the
last 3 years or so. Has anyone else noticed this and offer an expalanation? As a dedicated 944 man
obviously its great as the value of all of our cars keeps going up. The best cars seem to be
with the dealers that offer them regular....

Simple. There is a huge gulf between a car that's in good condition, and one best described as "average". People now have access to t'internet, so they learn what to look for. They see that a £3K turbo might easily cost another £10K to get right, so think about buying the higher priced one instead. I'm not sure it's happening with S2s to the same extent, but having put so much money in to mine I hope I'm wrong, lol! I think there's been so many threads over the last couple of years pointing to the S2 (or a 968) being the best all-round Porsche for the money; without the need to modify it to get it at it's best, like the turbos, but significantly more modern in feel and performance than the Luxes. That's lead to a lot of scruffy S2s being advertised at way over their value, and even the best are struggling to get near the prices of mint turbos.
Turbos are always going to be the "collectible" 944, with the turbo cab and mint, low-miles, original condition Silver Rose cars always the choice for the people who can afford to buy them at their best but rarely use them.
I don't think they've doubled. Mine was probably the same cost in it's condition at the time as I'd pay now, four years on? Maybe a grand more now, but certainly not doubled. I get to see a lot of the official insurance valuations, which is a good indicator of the values compared to book prices. Again the gap has been increasing dramatically between cars in very good condition, with lots of money spent, and the more common cars that have a list of work approaching that will cost the same again as their value, or even significantly more.
Do a search on we buy any car for a "book" value on yours; it'll make you laugh until you realise it's what your insurer will be paying you in the event of an accident. Mine was valued by the Club at £7K, luckily, as the insurers wanted to write it off for the price of a new wing last year. With the cars polarising between cheap tatty runarounds, and valuable good-condition examples, it's so important to get an agreed value policy now. A bit OT, but I use any excuse to remind people they need to think about agreed-value policies, and the free valuation service!
Yes all valid points, I was really just commenting on the sudden massive
asking prices for turbo cars in specific. There are one or 2 on at 911
money just now, and I have been watching for a while and they seem to sell,
one dealer seems to just ask what he likes and a week later its sold....

Free valuations ?, I'm almost tempted to join up
You're on the "banned" list Blade!

OP, you're right; a few have sold through dealers at what looks like silly money recently, but they have been exceptional cars. To put it in context I've seen 944s in concourse condition, but without the money spent on the mechanicals that those cars had, given values of £15K-plus.
There are a finite number of 944s now in original condition, and with low miles. Those can't be replaced or replicated. There is the start of the emergence of the "restored" 944, but currently they don't make back what the owner put in in most cases. Perhaps £10-£12K for a well-sorted turbo? These are the real bargains out there.
Comparing 944 prices to '80s rear-engined options isn't relevant IME; for some reason the 944 owners seem to move on to newer options. I guess the lure of the sub-£10K 996, or a really nice Boxster for £5-£7K, are more of a temptation than a more expensive air-cooled 911 that will be overpriced by comparison and not as nice to drive?

I went to a 964. Does that make me special? Comparing 944 prices to '80s rear-engined options isn't relevant IME; for some reason the 944 owners seem to move on to newer options. If 944 prices are on the rise that is great. They are hugely undervalued cars.
