With the imminent release of the new Cayman S and all the rave reviews its getting what do people think about comparing the two ?

Currently the Porsche website has 7 Cayman R`s for sale around the £45k mark which are bound to be open to discount come March when the new model arrives. I reckon on about 10-15% discount is achievable which makes them around £38k. This is a significant saving over the newer model "S".

I appreciate the looks of the new one are better but as far as driving goes , what would you do ?

New "S" with a couple of goodies = £55k or save cash and get an "R" for a decent discount ???

£38k 'R' V £55k 'S' = No Brainer.

Depends what you want to do with the car but as a weekend toy, I'd go for the R personally. I knew that when I ordered mine in 2011 that there was a new model on the horizon but at that time, there was next to no information on the incoming 981. There are only around 200 odd CRs in the UK and it's a universally acclaimed car and the only complaint levelled at it is the use of the badge and manner in which some of the weight saving was achieved. Just because it isn't the latest model doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it. I'm holding on to mine for a long time and have my name in my dealer's order book already for the 981 R. He said I may have to wait some time but that's fine with me, it promises to be a fantastic car.

The 987R doesn't have 'leccy steering and it has a proper handbrake which are positives for me. I also have a 981 Boxster and the difference between the CR and Boxster is noticeable. My 981 is setup with sports seats versus the carbon fibre sport buckets so feels very GT versus the CR. I hate the electronic brake in the Boxster with a passion though.

I'm not sure how willing dealers will be to drop the price on the CR, it's a different proposition to the S and they may feel that some customers will try the new Cayman and not get on with certain aspects - maybe the steering, electronic handbrake and so on. They could be directed to the R on the second hand market so it might be a few months before there will be any willingness to discount. I'd say you'll stand a good chance of that sort of discount on a 987 S though for the reason you already stated.

Ultimately, it comes down to how you want to and how frequently you use the car. If you go CR, get a spec true to the proposition of the car because quite a few are specced like an S and ultimately, the only difference between a 987 S and a 987 R suddenly becomes the LSD and badge on rear lid!

Hope this helps.

I would have a Cayman R every time over a new shape S

you won't get 10 to 15% off them though, but none of the OPC ones are nice spec imo hence why they are still for sale.

I did not know about the electronic handbrake in the new one. They certainly dont mention that too many times in all the blurb and is enough to put people off.

The price difference alone is alot of "petrol Money" or "trackday money"

I don't think the new Cayman will depress values of the CR much at all, just like the 981 Boxster hasn't the 987 Spyder.

I agree with Mrd though - those CR's for sale don't look particularly great (although a white one has appeared but no pics) and I actually like sports seats, but wouldn't buy any of those for sale.

Agreed. I've been watching the OPC site for Cayman Rs for the last few months. No decent spec cars are coming up for sale, a couple of green cars have appeared at Silverstone and Reading but both sold before I could get to see them (this was within days, not weeks).

I wouldn't pay 55-60k for the new one when the R can be had for 40k. The new design is nice but I'm not going to spend an extra 20k to brighten up the roads for other people smile

Would only be Peridot or white for me, with red at a push.

I think the Peridot cars will be the most sought after.

All the new vehicles come with the electronic brake + stop/start. I don't mind stop/start from a fuel economy perspective plus the fact that you can turn it off but that handbrake is across the range.

I regret putting the stereo into the car and am actually going to speak to Porsche about stripping it out. I'd much rather have the storage bin in the middle. Non nav version is thoroughly rubbish and feels really dated.

Hate to be the odd one out, but I'd take the new S over the old R.

The R is a stunning car, no denial, but leaving depreciation out of it and purely looking at it from the driver viewpoint I'd take the 981. My own experience comes from 987 Boxster to 981 Boxster with multiple loan cars, and free use of my brother's PDK R, so I appreciate not quite apples to apples. The 981 is such a huge leap in terms of chassis and interior that it makes the older car redundant overnight, and even accounting for the specialness of the R I have no doubt that the new Cayman will be the same.

Ignore the EPAS criticisms (you forget about it pretty quickly once you get moving, such is the cohesiveness of the package), and you're left with a cracking everyday car that comes alive when you need it to. Depending on how trim you'd want your R or new S, you're not going to be talking a massive weight difference so a lot of it will come down to the chassis. Personal preference here, but the new S looks so much better than the new R too.

I know I'll be on my own here, and I know I've left price out of it, but that's my view on it. I really can't wait to drive the new Cayman back to back with the R to see the difference. smile

cayman R unless you want a car that looks like an asian audi! i am not a big fan of the design of the new 981(those rear lights off a kia and the spoiler from a audi TT) porsche did a better job on the 991 which is still not great.imho any 987.2 is better than a 981.in years to come the 9*7.2 cars will be most sought after on the secondhand market of all modern porsches (gt cars not included).due to a recession the 9*7.2 cars are also of the lowest volume ever built cars of all modern porsches and manual cars are very thin on the ground.
new does not always equal better!

What's wrong with the blue one on PAUCL? Some seems ok to me?

Don't know whether I'd have the new one over my CR until I've driven the new one. It'd be very expensive to spec it like the R though. Just the seats would be mega bucks!

Depends on numerous factors.

From what I've read, the new Cayman looks awesome, but needs to be spec'd carefully. You might be able to create a Cayman R rival for around £45k or a 991 rival for around £60k.

Looking into buying a property in France as part of my future retirement plans, love the CR but cannot afford to do both and i've enjoyed the dream whilst i've had it.

Fair enough! Shame you can't keep it. CR would be great to drive to France in. Good luck with the sale and purchase. All the best!

Without being bias either (as if us CR lads are like that!!!), I'd take the CR over the new Cayman any day too. Obviously haven't driven the new Cayman yet, but all the new electric gizmos put me off, plus just love the bucket seats and firm (but not crashy) ride.

I've actually been very surprised by how well the CR's have held value, and I've personally received so many emails from PH'ers asking if I'll sell mine that I'm confident when I do eventually sell, the fact a new Cayman is out will have no baring on its value.

It would be fantastic for one of the journo's to do a comparison (can anyone ask Monkey!!!), but I'm firmly in the CR camp.
