Hi, i've got a 2002 996 Turbo x50. Recently it started misfiring when it reaches 4500 revs. I took it to Porsche Chester who diagnosed a bent actuator arm - waste gate seized [bank 1-3]. Their remedy was a new turbo at £3604.23 fitted. Apparently this was a discount. Is this the only course of action? Would an independent be much cheaper? Woe is me.

I would be surprised if you couldn't half that price at a good Indy.

Could probably get the turbo rebuilt? I'm not an expert though...

I asked Porsche about a rebuild and they said that in their experience the unit disintegrates when you try to disassemble it. Should have mentioned it in the original post - I'm based in South Manchester.

Indi cheaper, oh yes.

Standard Turbo, around £1500 with VAT. Had mine done last year by Redline Racing.

Although if its "just" a bent rod a good honest indi could look at a repair, unless theres further damage elsewhere. But still there having a laugh.

OPC's, don't ya just love em biglaugh

TBH if it was me I would speak to the likes of 9e about upgrading to a after market turbo, probably not that different price wise and would not feel like sinking money for the same, good excuse to get a few more bhp wink

The problem with this is that i'd have to buy two turbos. Replacing the standard means I only have to buy one. Call me soft but i'm happy with the current performance!

Should turbos be replaced in pairs?

Audi recommend this for their twin turbo cars.

Hey Rocco, I haven't seen your name in here for a while. You still got the 964Ts? Did you ever get your Diablo?

The x50 is the factory powerkit. Different turbos, manifolds etc. smile

ETA - I took it you meant the difference between standard and x50 cars, not just the turbos. Doh!
Mikes answer is better.

The X50 cars and GT2 run the same turbochargers K24 models.

Standard 996 turbo is a K16 model

Yes got the Diablo sv variant (14 months ago)and just bought a Ferrari Scuderia lol
