I can't think of any better way than this video to demonstrate why a tweaked road engine and PDK in the new GT3 will be so totally, utterly wrong.

I don't think the Mezger ever sounds better than when in 996 guise with a racing exhaust. There's almost no inertia in the engine as you can hear in those fantastic blipped downshifts.

Wonderful, thanks for posting.

How (and why) did you do that ?

The OP posts a link to a great piece of rally footage and within four posts you've taken it OT and turned it into a thread about the pros and cons of PDK transmission and the perceived shortcomings of the replacement for the Metzger engine. . . . .

This is precisely why the PH Porsche forum has become such a tedious place and is being shunned by many.

Unlike you, I actually believe you are entitled to your opinion, so many thanks for your interesting comment. Do remember though, this is an Internet forum, where many different opinions are - and should be - expressed. Maybe you should ask yourself if it's appropriate to approach such a forum believing there are only two opinions in this world - yours and 'wrong'.

Anyway, I had sound reason for making the post you have so roundly criticised. Hopefully this will help you to understand my thoughts:

The simple fact is that this vid is epic BECAUSE of the fantastic Mezger engine, the sounds it produces and the beautifully-timed and consequently thrilling downshift blips executed by a driver of clearly enormous talent. Remove these parts of the experience and the result would be a whole lot less entertaining. IMHO, that's what the lack of a proper competition engine and a manual 'box will do.

So we have a vid that's a joy to watch, but won't be capable of being repeated in a few short years because cars that raw, that alive, that feral just won't exist any more.

It's therefore entirely relevant to a thread about the awesome-ness of the combination of Mezger engine / manual box / great driver to express dismay that Porsche's direction at the moment will (or maybe 'is likely to') take this very enjoyment from us.

...or is it in this case the six speed sequential box that requires ZERO talent to execute a perfect downshift blip? wink

...quite similar to the PDK then?

...and if it is a sequential box, which it both sounds like and looks like from other in-car footage then where does that leave your carefully crafted opinion?

That is why competitive rally cars have sequential boxes - he has not got enough time to be worried about the niceties of perfect heel and toe - the driver is focusing their efforts on steering and braking.

Is that a 996 or a 997? Front and rear tell different stories, but I'm guessing a 996?
