How accurate is the trip computer...
Discussion
Hi,
How accurate do we think the trip computer is in a Porsche?
I ask because I had a 2007 Cayman S and it reckoned I averaged 29mpg (mainly motorway miles). However, I have done some calculations based on tank size and range and it comes out more like 22-23mpg (I used to get about 380 miles per-tank).

I would suggest way out.
Rather sadly I've got an app that I used to record all expenditure on my 997 and amongst other information it suggested just 19.15 rather than the mid 20's the computer in the car said. Of course some days I'd get more and some days less mpg. The lowest being 9.3mpg (a Goodwood), the highest being 23mpg.
The app was based on spend, quantity of fuel and mileage and would appear to be a mathematical calculation rather than an optimistic non calibrated in car computer.
To give you a idea, I spent whilst I had the car:
£3312.98 on fuel
9,628 miles since picking the car up
253 miles per tank (average)
£1.423 per litre (average cost)
£.338p per mile in fuel
£5.60 per day on fuel
I ignore all in car mpg readings as wishful thinking.

I can't see how it can measure the amount of fuel through the injectors that accurately and there's a speedometer error too so it's hardly surprising there's a discrepancy.
On the XJ8 I find it to be quite pessimistic and normally do about 10% better than it reports. Mid to high 20's usually and when careful just crack 30.
Are there any regulations governing accuracy of trip computers? I suspect not but there are plenty of civil servants with nothing better to do.

Trips in cars or on bikes for that matter are absolutely pants. Way out on both. The only accurate way is fill up and check how much you used when re-filling. For example my 675 Daytona ave 35mpg when it was more like 28. My wife's Alfa would state 44 when it was more like 38. Total pants
