I am based near Leicester and am looking to spend around 24 k on a Porsche 3.8 or 3.6 Carrera s (manual transmission)

I would prefer to buy a desirable car from a private seller.

All the dealers are doing is buying cars from private sellers and putting 3 to 4 k on the price.

Anyone selling, get in touch.

Yeah I know, went to see a 997 last week at 24.5 k. The salesman was useless, I got the previous owners number off service history. Discovered the dealer paid 20 k for it

Come on what do you expect? They are there to run a business. I don't see them putting a 4.5k mark up as outrageous at all. Given that they must warranty and prepare the car (at least the respectable indies would). You pay the extra for peace of mind.
If you had bought that very car privately for £20k, and the engine had gone bang the following week, or you had discovered it was a cloned car, or had outstanding finance, what would you do? End of the day, it all comes down to an individual's attitude to risk.

I wouldn't bother trying to explain, clearly the OP knows better than the rest of us and fully understands how a reputable Indi works......

Buy a car, chuck mucky water over it and polish with a rag that's been dropped on the floor.

Add £4k and sell.

ps off on holiday with your easily made profit whilst laughing at the mugs who bought cars off you.

Start process again.

To the OP, 4K on a car......thats what i would expect. Look at the decent Indies and look at the prep that they do with not just spit and polish on the bodywork but mechanical stuff as well. Mine had new bonnet struts and condenser radiators to name but a few. Put into that labour for their own on-site mechanics etc and then the cost adds up including the good warranties that the decent garages offer. The rest though is up to you if you want to pay the asking price inclusive of the 4k mark up or you want to bargain. But, unless you are a Porsche/mechanic expert then your going to find it hard to get the salesperson down from the asking price, if at all.

My point to all of the above in seeking a private car to buy :-

1) I can do a hpi check on the car for finance.
2) Employ a local Porsche independent specialist to do a per buy inspection on it for £300.00
3) buy a warranty online myself. It is a myth that traders supply warranties, anyone can buy them.

Given all of the above I reckon I can save the 3 k margin by doing the three items as above.

Yes you could potentially save that amount. You could also spend more than that amount too if you don't know what you are doing.

You pays your money etc.....

I would pay the £300 for an inspection prior to buying. Prob better than inspection dealer would do anyway

Agreed. The last private car I bought, took an age to find, needed £500 spending on detailing, £220 on a check, £2000ish on a warranty and £1200 on some extra bits I wanted on it. I new it needed this so very happy, but a good indy will sort all this at no inconvenience to the buyer, so £4k profit on a £25ishk car is ok in my book. Even £10k used cars usually have a £2k difference between buy and sell price.

If you can find a Privately owned Porsche that is detailed properly, umarked, has some Porsche warranty, has got the bits you want and checks out properly (mechanical/body check, HPI and previous owner etc) then go for it - you should save around £4k.

Indeed they can - however, there are warranties and then there are warranties.....

I bought my turbo from a dealer with a good reputation. It had a number of niggling faults over the first year and their after sales was superb. Everything was sorted with no cost to me, I was always given a courtesy car and on a couple of occasions they even came to collect the car.

I bought another (non-Porsche) car last year - also from a dealer - and it was by far the best car buying experience I've ever had. The after sales there was even better - I had a minor problem several months after buying the car - something a PPI would not have found, and something that the dealer could not have foreseen. I mentioned the issue on a forum once I'd found / fixed it - and the dealer called me a few days later to ask me what it had cost me, because he felt I shouldn't have been inconvenienced or had to pay to fix it.

Whether you buy privately or from a dealer is personal choice - and of course there are good dealers and bad dealers (and I'm sure some of the bad ones simply do stick a mark up on a car without doing anything). But the idea that all dealers do this, and that buying privately with a PPI is a simple way to save £4k is just plain wrong.

It may well do but in some circumstances like buying a Porsche sitting in Afghanistan, id prefer to take all that hassle out.
