Deal done on sunday and after trying many alternatives we are finally replacing our merc with a guards red pdk'd Boxster S.
Our first ever Porsche and very, very excited - Feb build slot for March delivery, woohoo!!
Quick question - is the factory collection as good an experience as the salesman suggests? we're tempted right now tbh - good excuse for a break perhaps?

The merc, and now the boxster, are actually the misses wheels and she, well both of us really, fancied a change.

We had it's first "major" repair bill recently!!! Awesome car the 55, but ours was getting on a bit and when they start going wrong they can empty your bank account pritty quick!!
Anyway, gone to a new home now so just a question of counting down the weeks, its going to seem like an age!

I can see the argument being put forward here and I tend to agree to some degree. I would wager that the majority of new SL and Boxster buyers won't be 'purists' in the sense that the purists would opt for the manual box (if it's even available in the Merc?), nor will they keep the options light and aim to enjoy the car to take on trips to the best winding roads around Europe. It's also quite unlikely that many will be taken on trackdays (although that's not to say trackdays are only for 'purists'). They are - as are most premium sports cars nowadays - generally specced with as many toys as people can afford, with auto boxes to spend their lives commuting up and down motorways or trundling along country roads to watch the polo or park outside the local fancy restaurants.

What a ridiculous statement! You might as well say everybody with blue eyes isn't a purist! How can you possibly define anything by what it isn't? Can you imagine asking for anything using that method? At the dinner table... "Please could you pass me the thing that isn't a saucer, table spoon, plate fork, knife, glass, bottle, jug or vase please? It isn't black, green, pink, brown, red, orange, grey or blue in colour, thanks".

But that's not true is it
You've toned it down from your first statement which was pretty black & white - you said people who buy SLs & Boxsters are not purists. Perhaps if you'd used a few phrases like 'more likely too' and 'reasonably likely in my opinion' you wouldn't come across as such a troll. Just saying like

I did this when I bought my Cayman a few years ago. While it does sound like a silly notion that you are being charged extra to go and pick up the car yourself, I am very glad that I did it.
The wife and I made a trip of it and popped over to Switzerland for a couple of days after picking up the car and then drove back via the Champagne region where we made full use of the dual boot capacity of the car!

The factory is an amazing place and the museum well worth a look. The food in their restaurant was very good as well. The hotel we were put up in was a bit "meh", but all in all a very enjoyable trip.

We did it when I bought my 996 - agree with the above (albeit we didn't go to Switzerland) but I'm glad I paid for it, a great experience.
You also come back on Eurotunnel 'Club Class' helping avoid the queues at Calais.

Personally I don't think the factory collection is worth the money, seems very pricey for what amounts to a tour / lunch and then have you transport your car back to the UK and then have to have it registered in the UK anyway (I believe you drive it back on the equivalent of a German trade plate). I'd like to go round the factory though, but perhaps make a special trip of it once you have the car?
As for the SL vs. Boxster debate - they are like chalk and cheese. SL55 sounds lovely goes pretty well in that very lazy supercharged giant engine kind of way but show it a corner and it's nowhere in comparison the Boxster. I also think the noise of that flat six engine at full chat is something to behold especially when coupled with the sports exhaust. In my view a person who is considering buying an SL350 would not be looking at a Boxster - too different an experience in my view
I'm not far into my ownership, but already a drive in the Boxster feels more special somehow than it ever did in the SL55, but there is no doubt you do have to be prepared to "drive" it more to get the best out of it.
