Hi there, I hope you can help me with this. Any feedback is appreciated.

I have looked across the forum to find a particular instance of this problem but didnt find anything. My car has twice shown the coolant level issue. The first time it was under hard accelaration in second and when I checked, the coolant it was probably sitting on the min...I filled it up to max and things were fine.

However, I had done about 20 miles with no issues and then i nailed it in second...the light came on. It seems to stay on for app 2 minutes and then the light goes off. I did another 20 miles or so and the light has never re-appeared. I checked the levels and they are still OK in comparison with where I filled it to.

I accept that there may be a leak going on somewhere to account for the low level in the first place but it does seem a bit bizarre that i am only getting this under hard accel. in ssecond gear.

Not sure what sensors are wrapped round the system to detect this but any thoughts on what i should be looking at first?

Cheers

Peter

Hi,

There is a level sensor in the side of the coolant expansion tank to determine when the level is low.

It maybe that the case that as you rev up it is draining the tank down to purge the front radiators as the water pump will be flat out...

What coolant cap part number is on the tank...? Does it look like there is any change is has been leaking around the cap ?

Have you had any work done on the cooling system previously and how long have you owned the car ?

thanks for your questiosn Mike. I have owned the car for one year and it has had some rad work over 1.5 years ago...i will check the part number question and come back to you. There are no apparent issues with coolan t other wise - rock so;id 81 degrees on the clock regardless.

Will come back to you and thanks.

As Mike says, it sounds like you've got a leak and the pump is pulling the water down below the sensor level.

I'm with the others. There's a leak and odds are the there are air pockets in the cooling system that accounts for the low coolant warning light.

I can't stress how important a leak free cooling system is to these cars and their engines (to all engines...).

While you think the coolant temp is ok because the gage says so the gage may not know.

If there's a leak the cooling system will not be able to maintain enough pressure to prevent the hot coolant from flashing to steam in various hot locations. Pockets of super heated steam form, bubbles, which will prevent coolant from contacting the very hot metal surfaces protected by the steam bubbles. Since the coolant is not picking up any heat from the metal and it picks up darn little from flowing past/around the steam bubbles, and in severe cases the bubble can block any coolant from flowing through that cooling passage and the coolant temp sensor is blissfully unaware of the ever increasing heat load the engine is building up in a few localized hot spots and the engine overheats, in spots.

This localized overheating may not do any damage that you can see or know about the 1st time, or the 2nd, but over time...

But over time this can cause a head gasket to grow weak at the head expands then contract from a real hot spot arising from the steam blocking coolant flow.

Get the leak fixed. Now.

Had something similar, it was a leaking rad. Had it a 2nd time & it was a coolant leak from a union on a pipe above & behind the offside front wheel. Coolant level also looked OK, but I did finally find in both cases "evidence" judge on the garage floor.

The caps and header tank can go on these. I'd brim her from cold and monitor the situation for a bit. Look for stains around the filler and on the inner wing to give you a visual clue. You will probably see some whitish residue if you're losing coolant from high up.
