Is it just me or is the satnav not entirely brilliant given how wonderful the rest of the package is?

I'm finding quite a general few issues with it:

1. Very outdated look even for 2007
2. Lack of any postcode funcationality

More specifically could I get a little advice on how to get the best out of it? A slightly odd question I know, but I seem to find different results with different use.

For instance, a quick search for a street won't turn anything up. But if I linger over each letter while choosing the missing street can sometimes turn up.

Is this because the system is loading as you make inputs?

It's hard disk based, so slow to load as you said (assume the 'puta parts are old school and don't process the data too quickly?).

It does do 4 digit postcode entry - when you select "Town" just put in the postcode, then select from list (ie: WR9 1) and it will give you the town/area.

Next select "Street" and as you start to spell it, appropriate suggestions will pop up.

It's not great, but better than I initially thought, although the maps can be a bit out of date now (bypasses and new roundabouts etc).

You should be able to get it updated at your OPC.

The latest 2012 software update does have full post code, newer mapping and improved functionality. However, the normal cost, for what is basically a dowload, is about £600.

Porsche should and could offer this for c.£250. It would do wonders for customer goodwill, and boost the reputation of PCM.

But, unless everyone complains nothing will happen.

Thanks guys, turns out it's £400+VAT, but that is still rather more than it's worth.

When searching for locations, is there merit in waiting on one letter before selecting another, to let the system load?

Any tips for use? I find the fact that one search can yield different results from another quite frustrating! I usually end up abandoning the search to find it later!

A 2007 PCM will be DVD based. HDD based was from late 2008 IIRC.

^^ DVD based. Although i haven't been kept waiting for it to pre-load the results of any addresses i've searched.

What is very evident is how heavily the system depends on the postcode before you get a list of the streets. For instance, entering the 4 digit postcode (WR9 1 as above) will delimit the available list to those streets within that area. If your road happens to be in another postcode (WR9 2 say) then it will not turn up. So your search criteria needs to be accurate.

Of course, the opposite is true too. If you're very general (say entering London as opposed to an exact postcode) then you will get a long selection but with the postcode alongside to help identify the one searched. "High Street" comes to mind, so you can see how this fits in.

In my experience, if i know the neighbouring roads i will enter that, select Detail, move the cursor about till i find the exact spot for guidance to plot then bring up the options screen. Hit Route Guidance and off you go.

I've had a check and my car is DVD based, but does NOT have the postcode functionality. Perhaps a gen too early...

It's upgradeable. What version are you running? DVD should also have the date which would be a strong clue.

Will check the date on disc when with the car again.

I actually tried to update it via a member on this forum but though he seemed very honest during and just after buying the disc he hasn't responded since. I assume I've been had. Feel free to PM for details.

I tried to contact him because the "update" disc seemed to do something (but I don't have added postcode functionality), in that I think the interface may be a little different. The "maps" disc you have to put in after the update doesn't work at all.

I use my phone when it's not working for me, but I have a speed camera program on that as well, so it's one or the other which it shouldn't have to be.

Are you sure? If your car is 2007 it should have partial postcode search. My 2006 Cayman S with PCM 2.1 has partial postcode. The thing to note though, is that it is not obvious; there is no postcode field. You enter the first part of the postcode into the Town field. Took me ages to realise that!

AHA! Maybe I can do it that way. Will definitely check that. I have always expected a postcode "box" or "field".

Sorry, I just meant compact disc - not really up to speed on IT tech jargon.

AdvocatusD - Although I said Hard Disc - I meant CD, which mine is. The other comments I made are correct , in that you can input 4 digit post code into the "Town" selection - does yours not do this?

I've actually never tried, being a little dim and expecting a "Post Code" field! Will report back.

Quick question. Is the in-built satnav capable of receiving live traffic hold-ups and re-route you real time, like my TomTom does? If not, it's surely a waste of space in 2012?

Yes, if you have a route active then it will pick up traffic messages and attempt to re-route.
