Heres the plan for the winter: engine out, heads off, inspect everything, cleanup, add lovely fresh bits as required, especially the bits that are hard to get at and the infamous IMS bearing...
Intend to DIY it, get the lump on a stand and take my time. As this will be at home, I won't have a flat bed lift so will use extra high drive on ramps to raise the rear, then drop her out.
-anyone done something similar, if so how did it go?
-if you've done it how did you safely lower the lump down to ground level, where do you support her?

I'd use an engine crane to lower it on to a trolley, roll it out and use the crane to lift it to the stand.

You can also use lower ramps and use the crane to lift the back of the car over the engine.

Place something with wheels that can take the load under the engine while car is on the ground (after disconnecting everything but engine bolts).
Undo engine bolts, jack the car up at the back end.
Roll engine away from car.
That's how you change or remove engines in the pit garages.

It's not too hard to do if you have some mechanical knowledge.

I decided to take mine out using just trolly jacks and took it down onto wooden blocks to lower it onto a smaller jack to then pull it out from under the car, it would of been easier with an engine jack but I'd started so I finished..
I took the engine and box out together then split them under the car then used and engine stand to work on it.

I take mine out to do the valve clearances wink It takes around an hour to have it out from the moment you drive in, but I guess it might be a little more straightforward on an old aircooled one!

Like most things it's just nuts and bolts. I made a wooden trolley with big castors that I lifted under the engine with a trolley jack at the engine/gearbox balance point, undid everything and dropped it down. Getting the back of the car high enough to get it out without removing all the induction gear is the main problem.

We're not asking for much but this sort of thing should be your benchmark..
