Just asking.

I mean, they are not really a 911, are they?

Same reason people buy VWs, innit. Wannabe Audi owners.

Poor fools.

Because they considered a 993 but then realised they can have a better car in every measurable criteria for the same money or less?

Deary me. This is like watching the manual vs tip users. But on steroids.

If you want a real debate, with substance, the question has to be "why would anyone buy a 911 in any form that isn't silver?". Everyone KNOWS deep down that silver is the best colour, and the fastest. Just like everyone likes Status Quo deep down.

Exactly! This is the whole point!!!!!

The 993 has qualities that cannot be measured that the 996 does not understand.

Because I wanted a daily snotter and they are cheaper to run than a 993? :-)

I don't disagree with that sentiment. They are all indeed fabulous.

However, if you want the real 911 experience, with all of the characteristics and challenges that entails, it can only be from the first generation. And that means up to and including the 993.

Everything after that is different.

I had two 996s - '98 3.4 C2 Coupe and '02 (Gen 2) 3.6 C2 Coupe. Both bought new for around £65k each.

At the time they were highly rated. In fact, Autocar had a 3.6 on long term test and declared it, "arguably the best car in the world".

Both mine were excellent, fault free, and a really big step forward over the air-cooled cars. Inevitably the 997 moved thing on, yet again, but in my experience, the 996 was a very good 911 and doesn't deserve much of the abuse some people throw at it.

However, it probably means there are some used bargains out there. I'd recommend a high spec, low mileage, FPSH C2/C4 3.6 'facelift'. PSE was the 'must have' on the 996.

I do like the headlights. I like the gt2s and gt3s - their engines don't suffer all the problems do they?

I hate 996's & 997's awful cars...............991's just having a laugh now.
Had 3 996's

996 GT2 and 2 x 996T's
Why the 6T was voted the best supercar in the world at the time is just daft.
I mean what the bloody hell has happened to Porsche, they really do produce terrible cars.

I'd love a 993 C2 but without a lottery win i'll never be able to stretch to one i'm afraid, just think where Porsche would be now if they'd have carried on making such an icon.

Pure classics.

Well, I thought I did, because I like 'In the army now'...but now I realise this was a cover of a track orginally written by Bolland & Bolland who also wrote 'Rock me Amadeus' for Falco....I now have come to conclusion I don't like any of Status Quo's original work!!!

I like 996's though. In fact, I would say the 996 C4S is one of the best looking 911's....

Well as its a wind up, obviously i have a

real 911 993 Turbo.
Fake 911 996 Turbo.

Love my "real" 911 its a looker, it under steers very well indeed also but i've had it so long can't part with it
The Fake is strange though, as its perfect in every way, i mean perfect and the kids and chicks prefer it to my real one, if only they knew it was a fake.

If you want a 911 to use on a regular basis, with high performance, modern toys, driver aids and comfort then 996/7 and 991 are perfect.

If you want an old skool modern classic as an occasional play thing which has bags of character, soul and driver involvement, then air cooled is the answer.

The end!
How hard can it be??!
