Not sure how common this is...But...
When I accelerate hard the shift to 3rd gear is a nightmare and rarely goes in.
There is a little side play in the lever, but I'm not sure how much is too much

Ideas ?

Synchro seems fine...It feels more like a control cable / gear lever bush worn....Somebody did suggest Engine mounts.?

Well I think service man will know it when he opens it.

Do you have a short shift kit? This can make a difference

Exactly.

Not behavior that is normal in my experience even when my Turbo's original shifter failed. Link came loose when ball socket failed.

After the busted shifter replaced with a new 997 shifter the shift action is like a rifle bolt. Snick. Snick.

This. Mines a bit sticky into 3rd - need to push if directly 'forwards' rather than on the angle (from the drivers seat so to speak)

I've got a short shift in mine, and it is fine for all gears.

I'm not a big fan of the way the 996 box shifts anyway.
