Can someone clarify this for me from the Pistonheads classifieds?

2003 turbo tiptronic - 0-62 in 4.9 seconds

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

2003 turbo manual - 0-62 in 4.2 seconds

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

2002 turbo manual - 0-62 in 3.9 seconds

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

I think I speak for all of us here when I say "huh?"

I thought that the standard Carrera was 4.9, the turbo was 4.2 and the Turbo S was 3.9

Or have I got that all wrong?

And is there really that much difference between the Tip and the manual?

pretty sure the normal 996 turbo is 420bhp and 0-60 in 4.2 and the Turbo S or turbo with the x50 performance pack is 450bhp and 0-60 in 3.9secs

Not sure about the Tip though i'm afraid

You will learn to take little from these numbers.

The turbo is a LOT quicker than the NA. Leave the numbers to the dreamers in the pub.

Interesting stuff

I am going to have to wait a little while before contemplating buying one but it is definitely in the life plan. I am just hoping that they don't start appreciating in value too soon. Another couple of years should do it.

Always thought the official stats from Porsche were

Manual 4.2
Tip 4.8

So what? Is 0.6 seconds important when compared to a fundamental differing driving experience?

Forget then numbers and choose the gearbox you want.

Wasn't it the other way around ?? I thought Tip was supposed to be marginally quicker to 60 as human gear changes are too slow ??

Drove the Tip & Manual 997T before buying my manual (sport-shift). No regrets :-))

PDK is quicker than manual, but not tip.

Apologies, it was 997 Turbo where (for the first time), Tip version was quicker to 62 than the manual (3.7 Secs Tip vs 3.9 Secs Manual).

Forget about 0-whatever and look at 30-50, 50-70, 70-90, 90-110 .......

Managed a nice lairy wheelspin of all 4 wheels and the PSM light flickering away coming from a slip road onto the main carriageway, at 80-90 as the I hit 3,500rpm, on the local autobahn of course wink

Then go look at stats for a 9E car bow

Whilst the manual is theoretically quicker it requires driver skill to launch it efficiently so in the real world most drivers will achieve a better 0-60 in the Tip. I agree though, it's something that you should pay no attention to when deciding which car to buy.

Looking at book figures, my old TVR Cerbera should be faster but my Porsche definitely feels like it accelerates harder. When the turbos kick in you get a serious shove in the back!

In fairness though, TVR did something a lot more than Porsche too- lie biglaugh.

On a standard 996 tip I can hit 60 in 4.1 every time - those figures don't take into account brake boosting from standing start.

All figure are designed to be repeatable by customers - a manual when launched with psm off will be around 3.9

I seem to recall that Clarkson did a 1 mile race with a variety of cars including a turbo (can't recall which variant) and a Cerbera 4.5 and the TVR won

Of course Porsche do two things TVR's don't do - go round corners and fail to fall to bits

Must admit to dribbling at the thought of actually owning a turbo but I have to pay off the family dieselbarge first. In the meantime my older daughter refers to me having Attention Deficit Porsche Disorder - any sentence is likely to be interrupted part way through with "ooh, carrera"
