I am considering getting a Ctek trickle charger to help maintain my 911's (991) battery over winter as I won't be driving it much.

Does anyone know if you can do this through the cigar lighter? The Ctek will allow this, but not sure if the car will?

Seems a load less hassle than having to connect it to the battery.

Not sure about the 991 by I have used the C-TEK on the 997 cig socket and it works just fine.

It needs to be plugged in just right or the connection can be interrupted and I found this when closing the door on the cable which can also slightly crush the lead if you don't want to keep the side window open.

Because of this I connected the ring terminal lead (supplied with the charger) to the battery terminals and keep it in the battery compartment. I now just plug the charger plug into the socket end of the ring terminal lead which feeds out between the bonnet and windscreen without being crushed.

It's a good piece of kit.

I use one through the cig lighter on my 996. I route the cable between the door glass and window seal, which deforms easily to allow the cable to pass without resorting to leaving a window open.

Thanks guys. I have just pressed <buy> on a Ctek MSX 5.0 and cigar lighter adapter, so I will so be able to let you know if the latter works!

If not - thanks for the tip about leaving the battery connectors permanently connected - great idea!

I have used a ctek for the last 5 years on my 997. Routed from fag lighter through drivers door. Never had any issues with connection or cable damage, and struggle to see how you could do that.

Not worth the effort of connecting through the bonnet IMO.

If your cigarette lighter is permanently live you'll been fine. My ctek has spent all its life having either a Boxster door or 997 door shut on its lead. Let's see - we had the 986 for 3.5 years and replaced it with the 997 in Feb this year and the lead is still fine.

The cable can get kinked and I have also noticed slight indentation on the insulation after closing the door on it. I am not too bothered about this as it's not really getting damaged but the action of closing the door on the cable can cause the plug end to pull slightly in the cig socket and break the electrical connection. I have noticed this due to the amber light flashing on the unit on a few occasions. As I said in my previous post, the plug needs to be carefully pushed fully home and perfectly upright in the cig socket to connect - at least in my car.

I moved to the terminal connection lead to avoid this since it latches together and is more robust.

Each to their own..

I note (with just a little bit of concern) that the MXS 5.0 starts with a 15.8v desulphurisation phase - which seems very high to me.

The MXS 3.6 - which is the part OEM'd by Porsche - only starts at 14.4v.

Do you think I should be remotely concerned about putting 15.8v across my brand spanking new 991's electronics? C-Tek assure me it's OK, but just wanted to gauge some opinions here?
