Sorry for the boring post guys.
Looking at buying an 02 996 Turbo for everyday use.
Car has around 79k miles good condition etc.
Just checking the history and there is an rev range read out with the following info:

No of ignitions in range 1 38649
No of ignitions in range 2 236

Whats it mean?

Cheers

To the last poster If you can't be of help, feck off.

For those who can help, i take it, as they are only in rev 1 and 2 its okay??
There is no indication of hours just the 2 numbers??

Without wishing to sound rude, this subject has been covered a million times on here.
Please use the search function and if you can't find the answer then please post back (I'll try and find a few old threads for you) hang on....

The search doesn't need to be working for searching the site to be possible. Stick this into Google and all will be well (better than the normal search, actually):

sitetongue outistonheads.com search term goes here

ETA: don't put a smiley in - that should read site : pistonheads.com, but sans spaces.

It's only range 1 & 2 on 996

There should be an indication of hours run and also they should be able to tell you when the last range 2 was.

Hi Barry it doesn't say anything about hours mate just the 2 figures and the cars mileage.
Done a search and its a bloody mine field!

Just pulled my file out

I was given an A4 sheet with working log at the top.

List various codes and info oe being the number of range 1 and 2 with an operating hours counter and the last time a range 2 was recorded in my case 607 hours ago against a total hours of 1907 basically about 4 years ago they still made me have the engine inspection and sent all the details to reading but it meant I have a paper trail about the over revs and opc warranty.

Rev range 1 means up to the limiter, rev range 2 is over on that car and potentially an issue.

Could I suggest that rather than basing your purchase on a bit of paper in the history you concentrate on the car as it stands today. Any rev range 2 activity less than 100 hours ago should worry you. It is possible that the car has been over revved since the report was printed.

I wouldn't worry about that tbh. In fact I can never ever imagine my self even contemplating thinking so far into a purchase!

Judge it how it stands where it stands. I'm Probably wrong but that's my view

236 means nothing TBH, to have any negative effect on the engine you'd need to be way higher, and if its an 02 car then you won't be going for an OPC warranty in any case and i'd doubt a dealer worth his salt would have any issues warranting that if everything else stacks up in terms of history.
Probably less than 1/2 a second in that rev range FFS anyway, trust me these cars are difficult to keep off the limiter anyway especially if you give them some beans in the lower cogs.

These are fantastic engines so get it bought man, its nothing.

Never entered my head rev ranges to be honest & I've had loads of 911's....
How would you know on an old Air-Cooled car then?
Providing the whole car stacks up including the history/condition i wouldn't give it a second thought TBH, they're Porsches at the of the day & all of them will have been driven hard at some stage in their life.
