without more facts i can't help draw a similarity to an accident my friend had.

Driving back from a customers in his Sky van, round a bend on a B road and met on his side of the road head on - young guy in a Porsche.

Porsche guy had to be cut out and air lifted and a fair bit of reconstructive surgery - not sure how he is now but he was in a bad way.

Mate in the transit had a broken foot.

Both vehicles written off

19/20 year old + Porsche =

I drive far more carefully now!

My dad sat me down the day I purchased the car and warned me to respect the car and not to drive like an idiot.

Hindsight eh!

Someone on facebook posted about someome crashing their Porsche this was clearly his mate frown

Not wishing to sound cocky, but I was driving a 996 911 Turbo at 20 and not crashed (touchwood) so less of the "this is what happens when a <25 year old has a porsche etc..)

Personally I wouldn't want anyone I cared about driving an old high performance car at 18, my teen age experience was learning from crashes and near misses and being lucky enough to walk away.

very sad frown thoughts are with his family.

I've been lucky myself, bought my 997 C4S at 18, 22 now - still got it. Like most young people I've had a few near misses but i've always driven relatively sensibly.

There's a lot to be said for staggered BHP restrictions based on experience levels. Young drivers learn in wheezy understeery FWD traction controlled safety carriages. You need to understand the theory (even better to experience in a controlled environment) of how different cars behave to drive safely and well.

Want us to insure you on a performance RWD car? Can you show experience in same? Are you prepared to spend a day at an approved driving course?

£150, come away a better driver and not dead.

RIP but sadly I fear avoidable.

It's a lot easier to crash a RWD car with no driver aids than a 996 turbo...

It's a bit like smokers saying they know someone who lived a healthy life till 100 and died in their sleep, so smoking won't kill them.

Maybe not, but the chances are far greater. I don't care how many examples you can give to the contrary, a young and inexperienced driver (male) + a powerful car = a far greater risk of accident.

A lamp post on the side, and a sign post with the rear!

Yes of course as a rule of thumb - I am aware of what RWD is like, I have been driving an MR2 Turbo with about 280bhp and no driver aids.. since 19 so have a good idea.

Priceless thread this no details except we know youthful overambition caused it. Nice.

Just a few weeks ago I was coming out of a corner onto a straight and this meathead in a van was coming the ither way. I guess he must have decided I was driving too fast, having too much fun or whatever moronic process was taking place in what passed for his brain. So he swerved right into my path. I braked hard and he swerved back again, no accident. Maybe our poor deceased friend had a similar encounter but with a worse outcome?

We hate stereotypes more than most as porshe drivers so should reall try to avoid it.

Each to their own, but there is time to be a lion when you've some wool on your back, if you pardon the expression.

That's the whole point though... the young chaps are going to be far more likely to crash, and seriously.

There are always exceptions to the rule... I know a 33 year old chap who drives like a prat in his C63 AMG... I refuse to sit as a passenger in his car anymore if he wants to put his foot down... I would put money on him having a serious accident soon.. and certainly more likely to than the average 19 year old.

But would I be happy about my 18 year old son (when I have one) driving a powerful RWD car? No way.

I genuinely think that people should actually learn how to drive powerful cars before being let out onto the roads with them.

Generalising, I know, but the under 21 category is high very risk - lack of experience, lack of situational awareness, too much testosterone...... And sadly some older drivers grow up with bad habits and never learn.

Most would do well to spend some time in motor sports to hone their skills and have some fun 'on track' rather than 'on road'.

This is one of my favourites - 14 to 16 year olds in rwd sports cars, part of the BTCC - not without incidents though biggrin

If that accident happened where they say it did, it's a 30 or 40mph restricted zone, there are several side roads that join the main road, not a great stretch of road. Such a waste at 18yrs old & clearly a petrol head frown
