please help my son.
Discussion
many many posts on this if you search. Really depends on what he wants.
On an average day unless really pressing on there isnt much difference in performance. Once you push the go pedal though the TT is streets ahead.
The 997 will be a nicer place to be, a whole lot more modern, but could be subject to RMS issues which the Turbo won't.
As I said, do a search and there's loads of material on this but it will come down to personal preference, he should go and drive both.
But nothing will replace "the mental" when the Turbos come on song in the TT so be aware from the outset, that can be addictive.
Both nice cars and a nice choice to have.

My son has a bit of a problem, he has a budget of £30k, and would like to know if it would be better to buy a 996tt or a 997cs.He just cant make up his mind, what would you experts choose......?????????????????
The cost of one of these cars is not its purchase price alone, it is the purchase price along with registration/taxes, insurance, and running and servicing costs.Even though one can probably buy a good Turbo for what you son has to spend, the cars when new cost around 3 or 4 times that much money. For example: My 03 Turbo cost new $120K. I bought it used in 09 with around 10K miles on it for less than half that.
But it still costs like a $120K car to service and prices to service/repair these cars have not come down since then.
The general rule is to buy the best car you can find and afford. Another general rule is newer is always better. Thus all other things being equal (and I realize they are not, one car being a Turbo, the other not a Turbo) the 997cs would probably be the car of choice.
Best advice I can offer is to test drive both examples and determine which car offers the better experience.
Set aside 10% of the car's purchase price to have in case an issue crops up.
Sincerely,
Rockster.

I know I'll get told to shut up (and I know that's what you'll write)but....there is no 996TT! This is an American term and has no basis! I know it's a pedantic point but it's annoying, we'll be calling the front trunk on a Cayman a "frunk" like the yanks if we don't stop now!!!!

I asked the same question (poll) some time ago.
(more out of interest than anything else, as I knew that I was going for a turbo)
The only thing the 997 had going for it was that it had the new interior, but now that the 991 is out, it can't claim that any longer. Also, some prefer the lights of the 997, but in the half-light or in the dark, the 997 can easily be mistaken for a modern Mini (or worse, the new bettle
).
996 (facelift) lights all the way.
Very few people have a Carrera poster on their wall (2.7 RS excepted perhaps), but how many of us had a 911 turbo on our walls?
The 997 Carrera's perfomance is adequate.
The 996 turbo's perfomance is epic.
No contest in my mind.
p.s. My comments could be viewed as those of a biased owner, but looking at it another way, I also had the same choice, but I put my money where my mouth was.

997 C2S is ...... more than fast enough most of the time.
I disagree. In my part of the world, there are no dual carriageways/motorways and all roads are single carriageway. I would say at least 50% of the time I use the extra performance of the turbo (normally in overtaking).monthefish said:

Yup, and in the full pitch dark the 997 can also be confused with a bus... Your point being?

I went for 997 as I preferred the looks mostly (and, not being too biased, also still prefer them to the 991 until I get used to its 'bulky' shape). However, inevitably as with any model upgrade, there are quite a few improvements from the 996 to the 997.
A good video summarising these is the 'Best Motoring' one (clicky here)
