Tyre sizes for 19" rims on a 996
Discussion
Hi everyone, I appreciate that this may not to be to everyone's taste but for those of you running 19" rims on a 996, what tyre sizes are you using? Currently I have 225/40/18 on the front and 285/30/18 on the rear so wondering what adjustments you have made for upsizing the rim? etyres have a calculator for working out the sizes within a percentage tolerance but interested to hear what you have done. Thanks in advance.

'All he needs to know' except fot the answer to the question that he asked?
Op, CraigVmax has some lovely 19" GT2/3 rims on his 996t. Perhaps pm him to ask the sizes?
was a subtle hint as to why not to do it :-) ie the cars not designed to work with 19" wheel/tyre combo the rear tyre is already 30 series.Op, CraigVmax has some lovely 19" GT2/3 rims on his 996t. Perhaps pm him to ask the sizes?
so to keep the ratio right you need to fit 25 series to the rear which is not going to be very nice imo.
why buy a 80k car and then ruin how it runs.
this looks stupid with 19" rims, but if thats the look the OP is after then who am I to say anything :-)

Each to their own.
I doubt Craig, a regular visitor of the circa 200mph realm, would have fitted them to his car if there was anything seriously wrong with doing so.
Unlike most people who comment on the issue (
), I have experienced both 19" and 18" wheels on a 996, my take is that the ride is, of course, better on the 18"s as you'd expect, but I actually liked the ride on the 19"s as it felt more 'exotic' if that makes sense (I have a second car which is my 'comfy' car, and don't need my turbo to be comfortable). I didn't think the steering felt as direct/precise on the 18"s than it did on the 19"s, but that is probably as a direct result of the increase in sidewall. You'll notice that all of the special 911's nowadays come on 19"s (yes, these cars have been engineered for 19"s, but it does show that wheels bigger than 18"s aren't necessarily the work of the devil).
the new cars don't run on 25 series rubber though :-)
even the 20" option on the 981 runs a 35 series tyre (Because yes it has been designed with that in mind)
And the 19" runs on a 40 series tyre.
the 996 already runs a 30 series rear tyre, so does not really leave you anywhere to go as the cars not designed in essex.
As models get cheaper to buy you do start to see a trend forming :-p

Hi. Yes, to keep the wheel ratios fairly similar you will need to decrease the profile of the original tyres. I upsised my 18" rims to 19" on my 996 fairly recently. I am now running a 295/30/19 on the rears and 235/35/19 on the front. The ride feels somewhat harder so expect to get that. I do think 19" "look" better - as they are on the 997s.

Kind of guessed this thread would elicit some of the responses and had hoped to avoid them in my original post. For the most part I am involved in the aircooled VW scene and they have a slightly different attitude and enjoy the fact that people try different things. Outlaw 356 next I think!!
Anyway, thanks for the info and I shall look forward to posting the outcome. For those that don't like the "comedy look", don't worry, the original Porsche Design 18" rims are only off for a refurbishment and will be back in the summer.

Hello,
I replaced the Standard 18" rims on my C4S for 19" Sportec Mono rims about two years ago. The immediate difference I noticed was the handling of the car seemed much more responsive although there was a noticeable change in the ride quality and overall the ride is without doubt much harder than it was on 18 inch rims and road noise also seemed to increase. For me I liked the change and the car definitely feels more planted. I appreciate that the look may not appeal to everyone but personally I think the larger wheels set the car off very well. I am using Michelin tyres
Rear 305/30/19 Fronts 235/35/19. Rear Spacers 17mm Front Spacers 7mm. I have uploaded a picture its not the best but you can at least judge for yourself what a 996 looks like with alternative wheels.
