Great article. Just the sort of thing I love to see and exactly the kind of piece that makes EVO the best.
They did a similar job with V12 and v8 Ferraris.
It's fascinating reading the conclusions , makes the idea of a nice £10,000 996 sound like a bargain.

Can't see it on their website, so you may have to buy or borrow the mag. Worth a read though

It's a good read and high time someone ran this sort of comparative test, but we all know it's a can of worms. My 10p's worth is that of all the Pork I've owned (964, 996 x 2, 997 x 2, 991) the 993 still stands out, don't care what EVO say, standard Carrera with 17 inch wheels and a sports exhaust, one of the best cars I've ever owned.

Is this the same evo who thought the E46 M3 was the car of the century, who devoted the first 24 issues to the impreza RB5, who said the the cayenne S has a massive engine failure issue ... and who placed 3 Renault hatches amongst the top 10 drivers cars ever made ?

If it was a Renault 5 Turbo like the one Ali G drive then they are spot on.

Yes biggrin

I would also say the same EVO magazine that consistently gets slated for it's championing of all things Porsche, giving a whole raft of them it's COTY title.

And the E46 M3 is a wonderful thing, and if you have driven Renaultsports wonderful hatches for any length of time you may well agree.
They've also declared the Ferrari 550 Maranello the best drivers car of all time, and the Porsche 911 2.7 RS and the Nissan GTR. !!

I would say that as an afficionado of this site that EVO is far and away the best printed media regarding cars and driving that's around. Like lots of us, yourself included, we all love cars and many have quite extensive experience of quite a few but lets be clear, none of us can hope to have owned or even driven a fraction of the cars that a journalist at a mag like EVO has done.
So without that opportunity and with judgement undoubtedly clouded (I know mine is) by ownership and all that it entails it seems sensible to take their opinions on board.
I would love to have spent a day or 2 driving all these 911s back to back or getting behind the wheel of all the contenders in their Ecoty feature but I can't so I read the conclusions with great interest. I am particularly enjoying their series of comparisons of great sporting cars from different eras. The 911 feature is the latest but there has also been V12 and V8 Ferraris, BMW M cars, the best FWD cars, best Hot Hatches etc. Love it.

Cars are like members of the opposite sex - if everyone had the same tastes then the world would be a pretty miserable place. We all admire a lot of them, even the ones we have no chance of getting into, but in the end we get to try very few of them ourselves.

You can get through quite a few if you hire them by the day. Cars, I mean. wink

Agreed!

Thankfully, EVO have provided a well balanced, honest, and thoroughly conclusive review of 911 development throughout the years.

Compulsory reading for 911 enthusiasts.

A great article, well worth a read. Not sure how you can not at least be interested in the opinions in EVO with guys like Barker and Meaden writing in there. For me those two consistently capture the essence of what a car feels like to drive better than anyone else.

All the comparisons like this and CoTY type tests are fun to read but ultimately not definitive as who's to say the criteria they are judging against are really that meaningful to you or I? Maybe, maybe not, but are they worth taking on board and mulling over and enjoying? Absolutely!
