Folks,

In discussion on a GT2 (997) - it's got rev range 5 noted for 85 ignitions (or 85 ago - wasnt clear on conversation). Compression and Leak down has been done, but no mention of a strip down / bore / valve checks. While OPC are putting full 2yr on this whats the thoughts on RR5's ?

Seem to recall a thread on this a while back

If they're putting a full warranty on it I wouldn't worry but I'd want documentation (date/time etc) of the RR5 so it's clearly recorded that this was how they sold it.

Is it remapped or running the standard limiter?

Can you post or pm the dme readout to me and Lee.

We learned a lot about rr buying his nail!!
biggrin

PS. You do know it will have a clutch pedal?

Standard GT2, it's an OPC supply with Pork warranty so no remap Baz. Swapped texts with Al on it.

If the tests are ok and the warranty company are prepared to take the risk then go for it, they're the ones who'll lose out if anything happens, just buy it cheap and sell it cheap with the warranty still on.

Considering how easy they are to hit into the limiter and log minor over-revs I'd be more cautious with a GT2 with 0 in all the rev ranges smile

Hitting the limiter is fine. Triggering a range 5 on a missed downshift is something else completely!

At the very least the engine needs a compression test by a specialist.

I recently considered a 997 Turbo that had hit Rev ranges 1 - 5. I spoke to Steve at JZM and he suggested I walk away. Evidently, Rev Range 5 = 9,000rpm and is caused by a selecting the wrong gear on down shift. JZM will not take a car into stock or on SOR that has visited Rev Range 5 or 6.

Have you checked with Porsche GB to see if they will warranty a car that has recorded Rev Range 5 ?

The other issue is when you come to resale time. A number of dealers such as 911V, JZM etc will interrogate the ECU of a prospective car for Rev Range issues etc before purchase. Some will refuse to purchase it and others will use Rev Range data to justify a low bid.

There are plenty of cars around so is the OP comfortable buying one that has "history" ?

Odd how opc are retailing it. I am not sure they would take one in that has hit these ranges. Could it perhaps be ex-demo or press car?
When spending 90k odd last thing you want to do is have doubts about the rev range. May be best to wait until another comes along which agreed may be some time away.

If you ask me the whole rev range decible is a crock of ste.

My old 997 Turbo had over revs all the way into range 6 (when i had never so much as even missed a gear) and was still going strong after 300 or so opperating hours after this supposed event, which had apparently occured whilst in my possension.

Having spoke with a senior technician he seemed to have the impression that it was a case of how long it was held in the rev limiter to show these over-reves as opposed to an actual mechanical over-rev causing the spike into rev range 6.

As an example they even had a Tip turbo that had been on he PIWIS shoing nothing in ranges 2 - 6 and after a spirited test drive was showing overrevs in range 4. this was not the first example I heard of on a tip car which in theory should not even register a range 2 over-rev and in itself should show how flawed the system of registering these over-revs is.

IMHO it is simply porsche either trying to wriggle out of warranty claims or trying to avoid putting warranty on cars that have been drove hard that may be suseptable to claims as a result of when the reality is they should stand up to a degree of being driven hard.

All I will say is that is it mechanically possible for an engine that is limited to 6700 to rev all the way into 10000rpm without blowing sky high almost imediatly??

Please excuse the bad spelling punctuation and construction of sentences as im rather drunk right now..

My final year of warranty incurred some extra engine testing because of a rev range issue which I know for certain I hadn't done. There's plenty of stories on here from people with the same experiences.

I believe there's a bug causing them to be logged below the revs specified, and now dealers are jumping on the bandwagon to screw you over because of it. There was a good piece a while ago from 911V on here talking about how some of the readings he's found were physically impossible, so I guess some guys are being pragmatic.

Irrespective of whether damage has been done or its “a bug” in the system, the seed of doubt is there. Not unlike a Cat.D in that respect, there’s every chance it’s as good as a non damaged car but most of us would walk away or expect a fair reduction in price.
According to my OPC, anything over RR3 (on a 997 GT2) requires an engine strip down and any problem rectified before an extended warranty would be possible.
It would be interesting to know what RR4 was, If high numbers it is reasonable to believe that it’s not a bug?

Exactly.
I have heard of reports with 1 or 2 revs in RR4 or RR5 while RR3 is clear which is clearly impossible so there may be a bug somewhere. However if there is an equivalent number of revs throughout 3 4 5 describing an event at coincidental times its hard to ignore.
If the OPC are warrantying the car you at least have peace of mind for 24 months - during which time I would have thought any damage would be apparent.
But as Al said re sale must be a question.

If only you could find the original owner as I bet the OPC gave a trade in based on potential engine damage.

At least the 997 system allows you to pick out mechanical overrevs in 3 4 5 as opposed to a remapped 996 which collects type 2 every time you stray above the factory limiter on the way up.

Even with a warranty it would only be worth considering if it was being offered to you a long way below normal market price. Moving it on will feel like giving it away, so acquiring it should feel like being given it if you know what I mean...

Thanks folks. This is all the feedback I need. I'll keep looking and let someone else have the risk here.

The price is certainly not "keen" at £89k and change, while not the final price I'm sure the resale piece is the nail in the coffin.

While it has OPC warranty I can hear the sucking air through teeth a year down the road when next changing. Rennlist concurred same - with RR5 typically requiring a strip down. It may all go just fine but don't want to find out a year down the line that a rod goes or some such like.

Guys, there are enough engines lunching themselves without high rev issues.

Really? The 'Mezger' GT2 engine is pretty bullet proof, no?
