my friend has a 987 boxster 3.4s with very low miles, bought from a porsche main stealer and still under warranty.

the car had a 40k service carried out at the main stealer about 500 miles away. any warranty work was attended to at that time.

the car has now developed a loud 'squeak/creak' from the nearside rear. she booked the car in at the local porsche main stealer (not the supplying stealer as this was too far away) for the car to be sorted (under the impression it would be done under warranty).

they called her yesterday and said that the cause of the squeak was rusted discs and that she also had a badly worn tyre which needed replacing (and therefore both should be done). she questioned how this could have been missed less than 500 miles ago, and they told her that these cars were liable to this sort of thing when not used regularly (she uses hers every day).

this all sounds like utter tosh to me, especially as the works they are suggesting conviniently do not come under warranty.

is she being rolled over?.... i can't fathom how rusty discs can be related to a squeak which occurs when you drive over bumps without braking... i can't help but think that they will charge her £1k+ for this work to be done, only for the problem to still be there and them to simply say 'okay, we need to look further, but those works needed doing anyway'.

am i being too suspicious?

Not at all. Seems she has been identified by both OPCs as the perfect mark.......

Does she have a badly worn tyre? That's worthy of investigation if it has uneven wear.

hmmm... not being to cynical... but woman walks into garage asking for X and they find Y at the same time... Of course its not because shes a woman, they would never do that... ever!!

Still dont understand why people try and do that as they will get found out for spouting BS.

Audi garage tried that with my mother with her S3, lost her custom for servicing the S3 and the sale of a TTS my father was making in the same dealership at that time, the main reason why they went there in the first place, she thought they would check out a squeak whilst there.

Not a porker, but my father has been banned from buying a 911 by my mother in the favour of a few more exotic holidays a year instead.

The tyre possibly needs doing as a safety issue, the the "creaking / groaning" sounds more like bushes to me (so the coffin / control arms need replacing), but maybe they'll discover those after they've replaced the brake discs (which unless thin / badly corroded on the inside edge may well just need using harder).

I would get a trusted indie to do the work with Porsche parts .... smile

The problem is that they don't get found out often enough.

Creaking could be a few stones at bottom of spring or bushes.

Where are you located. You could go to a decent OPC for a second opinion or a trusted Indy.
