I took my 1998 C2 to a local body shop this morning to get a quote for a wax oil treatment and a quote for a front end respray to sort out the stone chips. All was pretty much as how I expected things to be on that front, however things have taken a turn for the worse after putting the car on a ramp. A good degree of rust is making a fair attempt at taking hold on the underside of both sills as well as on the underside inner lip of both front wings. This caught me by surprise so I decided to get a torch out and go over the car with a fine tooth comb. The result was to find areas of corrosion on the underside of front and rear bonnets, on the outer sills just above the stone chip and under the rubbers of the rear side windows.
The car is silver so hides marks well and if truth be told I hadn't been actively looking for problems until now, however I am disappointed to see this level of corrosion on a car which has only covered 62K with full history and has been stored in a dehumidified garage.
I'm interested to know if many others have had similar issues or if I have a Friday afternoon paint shop car. If nothing else any potential new buyers make sure you cast your eyes right underneath the car before buying. I'm now going to have to fork out thousands not hundreds to get the remedial work done.
There goes next years euro road trip!

There goes next years euro road trip!OP - just in case you missed all of the many times I posted about the corrosion on my 996 (dealt with now, it's time behind the wheel from now on):

You need to register to see the pics, but it's a good thread and worth a read for any worriers who want to make sure they won't be able to sleep at night
Yours is unlikely to be as bad as mine was (GT cars have no waxoyl from the factory) - hope that's the case!

Great tread. In reality the rust on mine, although not as extensive is present in many of the same areas as yours, the jack points for example. It could be something to do with is being a 1997 production car. I bought it mainly because I fancied doing a hillclimb or two with it and with it having the M030 pack and LSD I thought it would be a good platform for a 3.7 cc ungrade. However I imagine getting the rust fixed will take a good deal of that budget.http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.p...

Looking at things another way does anyone seriously expect not to find rust on some examples of a 14 year old car? All of the previous models have had examples of rusting, I can even remember 12 years ago seeing a rusty 964 which was a bit of a shock at that time as it was only about 10 years old.
Apart from accident damage, salt is the number 1 cause of corrosion. It even corrodes galvanised panels.
The only way to stay on top of this problem is to: 1) not use the car in the winter or, 2) more realistically, make sure the underside is properly pressure washed during winter and at the beginning of spring when salt is no longer used on the roads.
If not cleaned properly the salt will carry on rotting the car all through summer, right up until the next layer goes on the following winter.
Treatment with waxoyl or dinitrol on a cleaned chassis every few years should see the average modern body shell last until it reaches "classic" age. Those without cleaning and preservative are almost all destined to the scrap heap or restoration clinic.
I thinks its pretty amazing that most 996's manage the first 10 years before the brown monster rears it's head.
The other option is to drive in a country that has no ice or does not use salt
