The driver's side window on my gen 1 Cayman has stopped working. I heard something like a snapping sound and the glass stayed in the closed position, but the motor still works when you depress the switch.

Probably the window regulator, its made up of cables, mine just snapped on my boxster, it is not a hard job to replace and there are videos showing you how to take the door apart. I took mine apart but got a garage to fit the replacement as i ran out of time, cost me £150 including parts. If you DIY dont turn the ignition on with the door airbag disconnected, you will get a fault that needs clearing. I had to buy a cable for £15 to get that done!!

Thanks for the advice. Did you purchase the regulator from an OPC or somewhere else?

Hi Trev,

This exact same thing happened to me about a month ago. Unfortunately, my window was half open so I needed to get it fixed in a hurry, which meant OPC. No warranty on my car so it cost £478 (inc labour and fitting).

As has been suggested already, it was the regulator that needed replacing but the OPC said that it had happened because it had corroded and to prevent the same thing happening again, the membrane inside the door needed replacing too. At this point I'd glazed over and I was thinking what I always think when I'm inside my OPC's showroom, "Its time to sell this piece of crap car". However once I drove away, I forgot all that and fall back in love with the thing smile

It took about 2 hours from diagnosis to fix and luckily they had one in stock.

That was bad luck. At least mine is stuck in the closed position so not quite so urgent. My local indy has quoted about £130 for the regulator and 3 hours @ £35 an hour to do the job. I think I'll let them do it for that price.

Yeah, it was bad luck... worst luck of it was I was actually driving to a Speed Awareness Course when it happened and its about the only thing I couldn't cancel to get it fixed for. It survived one night with a bin bag taped over the window and got fixed the following morning.

Might be worth asking your indy to check that the door membrane is watertight to ensure it doesn't happen again in the near future. This is what the OPC said was the cause of mine going however I am not at all naive enough to believe that it wasn't just a ploy to increase the value of the job. Worth checking though while you have the door in bits.
