911 SC - Which brakes and Fluid?
Discussion
Hi all, I have an '83 911 SC (3.0 Litre backdated to 73RS)
I use it on the road and track days. Can anyone recommend what to do to imporve the braking?
- Brake pads: Which make are best? (I dont want sqeaking though like some of the race pads as I drive on the road)
- Calipers: I hear that the boxster calipers are good to fit to the old 911's
- Brake fluid: So many to choose from. I boiled my fluid at my last outing at the autodrome so wanted a recommendation. I live in Dubai,...so it gets seriously hot.
Appreciate any recommendations. Cheers.
I do 5 or so trackdays a year in my 3.2.
I have tried the Ferodo 3000's( squeaky and dusty) , the 2500's (dusty) , Porterfields (crap) and now run stock pads , I get through them but they're cheap and cause no issues.
Have you removed your dustshields from behind the calipers as they retain a lot of heat.
As for fluid I use Motul 600 , can you not fit 3.2 calipers to the front? Boxster ones may be overkill , may have to change the rears to balance..

Thanks lads.
Will take your advice on the Motul 600 and remove the dust covers. I will also look into fitting the 3.2 calipers if need be.
What are your thoughts re improving engine performance? I have the upgraded cam chain tensioners, new seals etc, but thats just really preventative as a pose to performance. I have a new twin pipe on the car which cuts out the old cat and back box.
As far as I can see....lightening the car as a pose to messing with the engine seems to be the way to go. (I am keeping the aircon as I need it..even though I hear it weights some). Thinking new seats would save a shedload of weight and its already been lightened quite a bit with the 73RS pack on it, bumpers etc.
Welcome any thoughts.
Thanks again.
Luke

Luke, my SC is a little lightened, with grp bumpers, light seats etc, and the standard brakes work just fine on track as long as you don't trail them for ages building up heat.
Losing more weight is much cheaper than adding power, and benefits every aspect of performance. If you haven't done it, backdating the exhaust to SSIs (older style heat exchangers) is a great mod. As well as being freer- flowing its also a lighter set up.
Adding an LSD, swapping to poly-bushes and uprating the rear torsion bars has also significantly improved my car for track use, with negligible disadvantage for road. As above, impact bumpers.com is a good source of info

I run the DS3000 pads, very impressive. I need to really bed them in a bit as the first set did not squeal but the current set does. Only from that last 2mph. Brakes, I'm not sure that 3.2 calipers are much different to your SC's. Personally I'd fit a set of brake calipers and discs from the 930 turbo. Massive difference.

that DS3000 are dusty, but no squeaking on my SC. They do stop well though...
